I guess one way to tell if Victor's shack is intended to be a player home is to see if you get the "well rested" bonus from sleeping there? I usually sleep in the trailer while I'm at Goodsprings until I get my favorite base in Novac.

Space is no problem, there's a few houses that are boarded up and not being used. Also, Easy Pete's place isn't owned either, or the gas station. That's where I always store my stuff at the start of the game, it has lots of containers.

That's not been my experience. I don't have any more problems in Goodsprings than I do anywhere else, which is not that much at all. At least now that I'm not trying to run it with Windows 7.

My beef with that place is that there's no campfire. There's two Workbenchs and a Reloading Bench but they never thought to have a place to cook your food. I figured that area with the tent would be perfect, so I dropped a campfire there.

One of the points of player housing is that you can be sure that any items stored will not be lost as it is only through research that people can find out what is and is not 'safe' storage. It is one of the most common questions new players ask. This needs to be clearly identified in the game whether it is Victor's Shack or another.

Also, it provides a sense of belonging and immersion if you have a sense of ownership even it it is a simple trailer at the back of the Saloon or shack with basic facilities. Goodsprings offers these close to hand in the benches by Chet's Store and it is easy enough to get water from the Saloon. It only lacks a place to cook.

Any property should be simple like the trailer or one of the boarded houses at the back with a working oven or fire outside, owned bed and some storage. Nothing more is needed as a simple 'base' to securely store your stuff at the beginning, with the key provided after a few quests (you don't 'save' the town only really help Ringo though it's a communal effort and get the rep)

The most appropriate Goodspring home I have found which has a nice background story and does not seem to cause issues with other mods is http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/43246. It is in one of the existing houses close to the Saloon, is kept fairly understated and adds ways to purchase upgrades like a working oven etc. which is more in line with upgradeable properties in Skyrim which is a system which works well IMO as it allows you to upgrade as you progress and gain the caps.

But just having a key to the trailer and knowing you have safe storage (with a few basic upgrades like a fire etc.) would be fine.

Hopefully they will be bringing in the housing and player built options as they have done in Skyrim and Hearthstone DLC because it adds a lot to the game IMO.

That won't be happening with New Vegas. The last DLC for it was Lonesome Road, and Obsidian is finished with it. You'll have to get the PC version and rely on mods for any new player housing options.
