Suicide in Tamriel

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 7:58 am

Just a curiosity, as I haven't read so much, is there any distinct views on suicide in the various Tamrielic cultures? Is there anything resembling the ritual suicide of the samurai? Is there any culture or religion that forbids people to take their own lives? Thanks.

IIRC, a large amount of Crowns also committed suicide when they (initially) lost to Septim.

Suicide in Sheogorath's realm seems to be frowned upon, since the soul is denied death and forced to live forever as a ghost at the Hill of Suicides as punishment.

That was quite a shock for them. On the other hand they were interwoven with the Temple and they had to follow Vivec. On the other hand the Armistice was orchestrated by Vivec and was a total surprise for all. A surrender was also completely unheard of for the Dunmer. Unable to accept it, yet still required to follow Vivec's command they choose the only way out, suicide. I don't think this was ritualistic, however.

I know orsimer loathe the idea of becoming old and frail, and wish to die a good clean warrior's death.

As for suicide in general...umm...probably disapproved of...?

I still wonder why Sheogorath was so mad about people committing suicide or growing beards. He didn't really have a reason (what a surprise).

Also, the last bastion of the dragon cult (I think it was somewhere in southeastern Skyrim) ended like the Jonestown massacre.

Forelhost, under the leadership of High Priest Rahgot.

Devout until his death that one.

In a gambit that may or may not have paid off. If Snow-Strider burnt the place to the ground, it would've been sort of counter intuitive. It worked out well enough in the end.

Not really: My dovahkiin cut Rahgot and his cultists into itty-bitty pieces then ran off with his mask

There's also the End of Times, a suicide cult in TES III: Tribunal that foresaw the Oblivion Crisis.

Almalexia calls it a suicide cult, because she wants to get rid of it. Talking to the cult leader shows that they're more about preparing for the coming crisis, and most of those preparations need living people. A few cultists do kill themselves, but their role is to inform the ancestors of what is going on so they can lend their hand to this. Messengers rather than an exodus.
