Windows 7 sound problem: Help!

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 9:33 am

Yeah, this really stinks. I got Morrowind, and it was running smoothly...... With no starting video.... Uh oh. Then, after that, I realized that voices and background music did not work, HOWEVER, the title song, effects, stuff like that, DOES work. This is annoying though, becasue the world is so silent, Morrowind is not even fun anymore. The atmosphere is gone. ):

Problem: Videos and most sound files don't play

Hypothesis: It is a codec Problem

Specifics: I am using W7, 64 bit

Notes: I KNOW it is a codec problem after much research, and nightmare's codec eset utility was just what I needed, but it only works with Windows XP. So, if you guys can find something like that (I certainly couldn't) that works with W7, I would love that. And no, it is not a morrowind problem, just morrowind being f#@^ing picky about the codecs.

First, try the following things:

Set the association for MP3s to Windows Media Explorer. See what happens.

Then, in the properties of your sound card, set it to 16 bit 44.1Khz and see what happens.

If not, there is a thread in the Fallout New Vegas PC Hardware section that is marked "Resolved Codec Issue" in the title. In there is a post with the program and instructions on how to straighten out your codecs.

See post 15

I did set the mp3s to windows media player. I will try the sound card, and thanks for the reference to the fallout thing, that will probably help alot.

Hey, I checked the link in #15 this morning.... But I'm pretty sure it is just KLite. I already tried Klite, and it didn't work. I'm pretty sure it only works with FO3 and TES4. Any other ideas? (P.S. changing the graphics card settings didn't work either -_-)

I have done more research, and as far as I can tell, this problem is unsolvable for W7.... I've checked every forum post, every topic, every site, every codec reset I could find.... Nothing worked. So, I still need help.
