I have this fan fic idea should i go with it?

Post » Tue Apr 06, 2010 2:27 pm

Okay i haven't written a fan fic on here before nor have i ever really completed a story online, though i've done plenty of rps on other sites. But i was thinking of creating a Dark Brotherhood fan fic that takes place somewhere near the beggining of the 2nd era and would be about how the Dark Brotherhood got its start. I know they've probably done hundreds of other dark brotherhood fan fics but i was thinking of a fan fic about how the whole organzation started and who started the evil guild known as the Dark Brotherhood.

I was thinking about making the main character a very cowardly non violent scholar who is "Accidently" chosen to be sithis's champion. And with this sithis soon forces the scholar to help in the creation of a cult of worshipers willing to murder in his name and if he refuses he is threatened to be killed off. Also since the scholar is cowardly and non violent he begins to find himself in a tight spot when he is force to go out and kill innocents as he's to scared to murder but he's to scared to die also. I really don't have a good plot outline or any characters but i need to know if this is a good idea or not before i go further into it.

Really thats all i have so far. If you think i should do something different or have any other story ideas (such as a story not about the dark brotherhood or something completely differen't) please tell me. Do want to create my own fan fic and i would like any other ideas if you got any, again i have been rping for a long time and i would like to move on to an actual story.

w00t!!!

You might wanna do some study on the availabe backround of the Dark Brotherhood. It is a known fact that they are merely a rebel sect of the Morag Tong. Mehrunes Dagon is also a patron on a group of them, Sithis seems to be almost an entirely Cyrodillic sect of them.

All I can say is that if you're going to do something about the Dark Brotherhood, make it as lore-accurate as possible.

i know that they're a rebel sect of the morag tong, and i was planning to include them in it, also i know that no one really knows when the Dark brotherhood formed so i wouldn't have to worry about lore to much.

Oh, believe me, if you don't follow lore to the letter on the Dark Brotherhood schism, you will be eaten alive. I myself have done a terrible story that tells how the Dark Brotherhood was started (Don't read it, I was a horrible writer then) and I spent weeks poring over lore. If you need any help, just ask me. After three RPs and two fan fics on the subject, I find myself somewhat qualified lore wise.

As to specifics, you can't have the actual Sithis talk to him or anything. You can have the entity call itself Sithis, but it isn't actually Sithis. It is assumed to be Mephala, but there is some debate on that. Also, you need the Night Mother if you're doing this. You just can't leave her out, even though she is arguably the hardest part of the schism to get straight.

My advice, take every single bit of lore skeptically. You can tell the story however you want, just remember what it would evolve into, the perverse Brotherhood as it is today. For example, you could have your character who is forced to kill start the schism, but make it so he isn't in recorded history, or that he is a prominent yet mysterious figure. Ask questions on all the lore, but don't give away the story.

Best of luck, it sounds promising.

Cus he's a void. Voids dont have mouth.

I personally see Sithis as a metaphor for the emptiness of space which the gods are suspended in along with Nirn.

Wait, stop, and cease all discussion about Sithis. For one, he is a fridge with a closed door, and two, go to the lore forum. Search Sithis. There are probably thirty threads, each more confusing than the last. And no, I don't know what Proweler meant about the closed fridge.

And yeah, he is not sentient. He does not think. He does not, for the most part, really exist in the common sense of the word. I would call him void, but apparently even that description is wrong. Go ask a lore buff. And not a half one like me, get a real one. Like Proweler or the like.

But for your story, just know that Sithis can only be used if he is actually someone else in disguise. You can't have him actually do anything, but you can have Mephala who is pretending to be him do things while saying he is doing them. So you can use him all you want, but know it's not actually him.

EDIT: No :stare: Lorkhan would have nothing to do with assassinations or the like. I'm sure he's busy with one avatar or another, or doing other Aedra things. Go for Mephala.

PS Deepscorn Hollow is questionable in its lore. It says that the statue is Sithis, it looks like Lorkhan, but I still think it's Mephala giving the blessing. Lorkhan's too cool B)

Um....Lorkhan is a bit...incapacitated. But is a generally accepted fact that for the part of the Dark Brotherhood that is loyal to Sithis, Mephala is actually the being behind them.

You should be more worried about the Night Mother than the being behind the Dark Brotherhood.

okay i got it the night mother will be the one that forces the scholar to do her dirty work instead of sithis but she'll be alive instead of a ghost. How does that sound, that already gives me an idea for an intro i could have it up by tonight.

Careful about the Night Mother, too. There are three regularly accepted forms of her:
1. The ghost at the end of the OB quest
2. The woman you meet in Morrowind; aka an actual person that takes the title every time the last one dies. It is unclear whether this is exclusive the the Morrowind sect or not, but the Cyrodillic sect does not follow it.
3. Mephala

One could very well be three as well, but it could also be an actual ghost of the original number two. Of course, the original two could have easily been Mephala as well, and mortals still took her name. Or that little old lady could well be an avatar of Mephala in disguise. So, I would say you have two choices: make the Night Mother Mephala in all her glory, or make her a powerful mortal. Or you could have it be Mephala pretending to be a mortal. Or you could use Darth Ravanger's idea and have her be a priestess of Mephala who tells everyone to worship Sithis (actually Mephala). The possibilities are endless, and originality is a huge plus.

So you have to be equally careful, if not moreso, about the Night Mother than you do Sithis when concerning the DB schism.

Well i was planning to have intro introduce her getting ready to overthrow the grandmaster of the morag tong (or maybe a bit lower postion since that postion is pretty large.) I thought i would make the night mother an ex morag tong assassin.

If you can do it right, then it'll be great, but if you mess it up at all...like even a minor detail, the whole fan fic may as well be a smoldering pit of clannfear crap...

I think i might do a remake of the wrath of sithis instead of including sithis himself. And if i do include the wrath of sithis it won't be wraith like in oblvion.

Okay, but you know the wrath of Sithis was just a wraith summoned by the DB to punish you, right? It isn't actually...anything lore related?

And your thoughts on the Night Mother are a given, but what I am saying is that she was probably not a real mortal person. You could portray her that way, but you simply can't ignore her connections to Mephala, or at least not Mephala's connection in other parts of the schism.

Also, the schism was caused by multiple reasons:

1. The eventual DB wanted to let anyone hire them, to make more money.
2. Religious issues- When the Tong went to the Tribunal for legal sanction, they supposedly started worshipping Almsivi instead of purely Mephala. The original founders of the DB wanted to worship only Mephala. The Cyrodillian branch is a perversion of these teachings, translated to Sithis in no small part by the Night Mother
3. Arguments over the recent assassination of the Potentate Versidue-Shai- Whether it had been a good idea, being they were outlawed, etc.
4. The Night Mother- She was either the leader or one of the leaders of the Tong, although certain sources say she is an ex-Thieve's Guild member, though both are possible. She could still be controlled by or an avatar of Mephala.

EDIT: Exactly as Ravanger put it. I'm sure he knows more about her than I do. Did you do any research for that role, or did you already know it all :P

or at the very least influenced by mephala. Definitely if the night mother is a person they should have some connection with the web spinner, whether mephala is merely an "invisible guiding hand" or barking orders or somehwere in between is up to you.

Well what if i made Mephala was the one running the show, and was the one that gave orders to the night mother. Also i know the wrath of sithis was just to punish the character but i want to make them more like sithis's messengers and since they don't really have any lore i think i could pull it off.

Hmm... okay. Go ahead with what you have, just keep what we said about lore in mind. I'll let you know if the lore is wrong once you write it :P

And remember, no matter what the lore says, none of it is concrete unless it happened in a game. You, as a writer, are free to do whatever you want with it.

Thanks, and good luck :goodjob:

In DF the quest giver for the Brotherhood is always saying stuff like "Mephala be with you".
