Valton: The New Hold, OOC & Sign-Up Thread #XXII

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 9:25 am

Yeah, I'll just make everyone's lives easier by saying Nyran has 2,000 septims, and then he can buy the store.

EDIT: Made my first IC post. How far did I stray from everyone else's descriptions?

EDIT: Made my first IC post. How far did I stray from everyone else's descriptions?

I am going to sound extremely mean now...

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130421141560/valtonthenewhold/images/d/d7/ValtonMain2013042100_edited_exported.jpg. You can find it on the wiki we created for this RP (check the OP of this thread and the roleplay-thread for the link).'

In the first chapter we had someone who wanted to run the stables, but he quit and did not join us for the second chapter (the one we are roleplaying now) so I don't think we have a stable to keep travelers' horses in. You would have to settle with keeping them in your backyard or something. And there are no gates leading into the city, and no walls going around it either. Valton is still only in its early stages so there are only a handful of citizens. We don't have NPC-villagers walking around. The only people in Valton that are not controlled by a player are the guards.

And the Jarl's house is in the south end. And there is no change in style throughout the city. Everything is the same old Nord-style you find in small settlements all over Skyrim. The only building that would have a different design would be Hela's Folly when it is finally finished.

And I believe that's it.

Let's let the other GMs have a chance to look at your character sheet too before making a decision.

Hmmm....does Valton already have an Alchemist? I was thinking of having two traveling alchemists stop upon Valton in a Medicine Show type wagon. Mother-Daughter team, not exactly Snake Oil sellers, as a large amount of the stock is legitimate. Though there might be some spoiled potions that someone unlucky, someone hairy, someone cowardly would probably buy.

I like that idea! There really isn't an alchemist, is there?

I haven't done a TES RP in a while and this looks like the perfect RP to get me back into this Universe. Someone mentioned that Valton once had a Stable Master but does not anymore, yes? I'd be interested in being the new Stable Master who dabbles a bit in falconry and hunting. If this sounds okay with everyone I'll start on a CS, though it may take a week or two and be excessively and unnecessarily long. :P

Do the Stable guy. Nyran needs a proper spot to park his wagon. :P

Moving on to a question I have about the city, the map AyumiFan linked me to had an overhead town rendered in Skyrim's graphics engine. Any reason why? And are the plank-sidewalk things on the map just eaves, or the plank-bridge thing Morthal has? If it's the latter, any reason for that?

Oh man, so much going on. We may need four more GMs

I'm skeptical about how fun an anti-social, combat-centric, unemployed character will be in this RP, so I'd recommend giving it a second thought. Having said that, if you want to try that character anyway, the sheet is accepted. Welcome to Valton

(Please, don't take this personally, I mean this with love ) I'm worried about the generally bad English. Lack of spaces, commas and convoluted sentences. Maybe it's just me but I had a really hard time reading it. I suggest taking a look at asap's advice in this thread because it might be very useful to you as well. I'm sure you understand, in a RP based exclusively on writing, some care in your writing is important as well.

So, I'd ask you if you could improve the background section to make it easier to read, before approving it. Other than that, the sheet's content is quite acceptable.

I like it. There is one alchemist in Nuramon, but since that idea has its own unique twist to it, it could work in parallel with him. I'll leave that up to Gavril.

Actually, that's not really how I see it. It's not a big deal but I always imagined other NPCs going about their own business. The guards would have wives and children. The keep would have some servants. Maybe the odd trader here and there. Of course we would ignore that for the most part, but I think we should assume there's more going on than the characters and the guards.

Yup, that sounds perfect.

There was a mod being developed but it's on standby right now. http://s1050.photobucket.com/user/Smigh/library/?sort=2&page=1.

Ah, I see. Nice. Wasn't really any sidewalks in Skyrim, except for Morthal, which was because it was built on top of marshes (it's probably my favourite town because of this).
Thank you for answering. :)

If you guys like, I wouldn't mind doing a map of Valton.

Haven't ever done something up close, though, so I can't speak for how good it will turn out. :P

@Ledgend: As others have said, your character may not see much action in the RP, and I'm unsure just how interesting "relaxing" and generally not doing much else than thinking will be for you to write, or for others to read.

Also, the armor confuses me. It sounds like something a very, very highly ranked altmer or imperial officer would wear as a ceremonial armor, making it very strange for me to picture on your character. (a large diamond in the middle of it?)

And then there's the probelm with there already being a smith, but if your character won't be doing any smithing, then that won't be a problem. Although, the char-sheet seems to indicate he's going to Valton to learn, assuming about smithing? Idk. Valton has so many empty spots that needs filling that having a non-doing character seems like a waste of sorts.

Hai gais, still asking about the taxes

And I have another idea. I think it should be mandatory for people to get a license from the Jarl if they want to run a stall in the marketplace. Buildings like the smithy, Inn and general store already have a license worked into their contract gotten upon purchase. To earn a license you would have to attend an audience in the Jarl's longhouse and pay a small fee to earn a license that lasts for one year.

Yes, the RP is quite alive. When you make a character, please don't be a mercenary :P

They see me sellswordin

They hatin

Speaking of houses and all that, are there free rooms in the tavern now that we've timeskipped? I seem to recall they were all full back when Leandra first swung around, and while she doesn't much mind sleeping in a ditch most of the time, it'd be nice to have a bed to rent for... however long it is she intends to stay in Valton.

PS: (makes grumpy noises at Vincent for no Fiona responses)

Merely days after the mysterious fire Sarynetta hired Jacqueline to expand Hela's Folly. In the beginning there were only three rooms for rent, but when the new Hela's Folly is finished there will be about ten rooms for rent. The way I see it there would be a small tent next to the one where her workers sleep where Leandra could have slept during the timeskip.

Hela's Folly will be finished in a couple days time.

I like those ideas, but the way I see it, that's up to whoever plays the Jarl and how he intends to run his little backyard. He could be very generous, he could rule with an iron fist, or anything in between. The problem is that he's been split between Vincent and Gorbad and in the process, he's been relegated to a side character that neither really develops.

Which points me back to what I said about the Jarl needing to get an income other than the gold he gets for selling houses. I don't imagine him to be an ass, but then I also don't see him handing out free stuff left and right either.
