Where to start?

Post » Wed Apr 07, 2010 7:43 am

I used to play Morrowind on my Xbox, but have now purchased it for the PC. Before I play the game a lot, I'd like to mod the hell out of it. I want MGE, the FPS optimizer, any unnoficial and official patches, any useful mods that add more land and places to go, any great item mods, and certainly mods that effect the parts of the vannilla game that don't run well(such as the lack of magic regeneration.
For a brief list of what I'm looking for(and by no means should these be the only things you put on your list):
MGE
FPS Optimizer
Any kind of mods that improve models, textures, environments, weather, etc
Vert good item, quest, and race mods
Function mods(such as unarmored skill fixes, and magic regen mods)
Any other mods any of you think are very useful
A mod to remove the level cap

Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

Also, if it matters;
I have Morrowind, Tribunal, and Bloodmoon, with no extra patches, no mods, and no plugins currently installed. I'm running Windows 7. I had no install problems at all, and have played vannilla for several hours with no problems. I have a really powerful system, and my frame rate stays above 40 at all times, and goes up to 60 often.

there is a whole lot out there to find. and you will have to pick and chose to taste. but for now i would suggest you pop over to PES and look at their most popular list on the right side of the site. there are literally thousands of mods out. and outside of texture replacers that do not need esp,s. you can only have 255 at one time unless you merge mods for more room. so head over there, browse around, and find what will be fun for you. good luck, and happy gaming.

Better Bodies
Any of Westly's heads.

And there really isn't a level cap in Morrowind.
No, seriously, there isn't.

Thanks for the help guys.
I guess I'll start with MGE, and FPS Optimizer, Better bodies/heads, etc.
Isn't there an unnofficial patch floating around that fixes a [censored]ton of stuff, and isn't there a pretty complete texture replacer(Morrowind HD or something)?

And on merging mods; can you merge most mods together, and if so, doesn't that make the cap easy to get around?

you can find all sorts of texture replacers out there. i mostly use connary's and darknut's. darknut's are on PES. connnary's stuff you have to hunt for. he yanked most of his in preperation for a big redo. just don't know how far he has got. MCP. is the big patch out there. it's on tesnexus. and yes mod merging is just fine. i am well over the 400 mod mark with merging. just have to be careful doing it. the script heavy ones do not play well together

Galsiah's Character Development, besides giving you a whole new leveling system, also regenerates magicka without having to rest.

Don't forget the MW Code Patch. Essential.

Be aware that the last version of FPS Optimizer caused some issues with crashing on program exit (requiring the Task Manager to shut it down, or in extreme cases, a complete reboot), and could also make your in-game map turn gray-scale (all color lost). The previous version didn't have the later map problem, but I don't know about the earlier crash-on-exit issue.

Depending on what you want to do in your game, your list of mods would vary tremendously.

In any case, a good "base" graphics replacer package (like Visual Packs, Vibrant Morrowind, Darker Morrowind, or any of several others) would be a good start, followed by Better Bodies to overhaul the nasty NPCs into something less "puppet-like".

Changing the character levelling process into something more natural is usually a popular move. Galsiah's Character Development (GCD) is the most popular, although I prefer MADD Leveler for most of the characters I play, and there are several other newer alternatives. GCD includes magicka regeneration, I generally add Fair Magicka Regen if I use MADD instead.

Combat mods, Crafting and Smithing mods, Magic overhauls and expansions, or Clothing and Armor mods are all matters of player preference. What's important to one player is "useless fluff" to another. I can't make a recommendation without knowing what you want.

One simple item that's included in Abot's Water Life is a ring which allows you to change the game's time rate (and the Tempus Fugit ring is also available in a seperate mod, I believe). You can do that with a console command, or modify the game's .ini file, but the ring makes it simple and painless. Rather than having 30 hours fly past in 1 hour of play, where the sun seems to race across the sky and it takes you a couple of ridiculously short days to walk across a town thats' two blocks long, I prefer an 8:1 or 10:1 rate. With the slower pace, I can generally go through a full in-game day from sunrise to sunset in one 2-4 hour sitting, make a round trip from one town to the next and back in under a day, or venture out into the wilds a moderate distance and usually make it back to town by nightfall. If you want to cross the whole island, it will still take several days.

Check out http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Portfolios.Detail&id=434757&id=9905 on PES for ideas. You also might want Vurt's texture mods.

Morrowind Code Patch 1.7 just came out not to long ago. I highly suggest you at least get that before you even start downloading mods or playing the game for that matter.

I'm pretty picky with mods. I don't dl it unless I think i know I will really enjoy it. I don't have that many mods for my character but the ones i do have are Tamriel Rebuilt, Welcome to the Arena, Cozy House, and a few misc mods like texture mods. I can't even remember the name of the texture mod that i have it's been such a long time that i dl'ed it but there are a ton of texture mods out there. I personally don't like MGE(Morrowind Graphics Extender) they try to make the game to much like the oblivion. I put in over 1000 hours playing oblivion I don't want Morrowind to look like Oblivion. That's just me though.

I take it you don't play Morrowind on a widescreen display? Or you don't care to improve good ol' Morrowind with antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, increased mipmap level of detail, better fog rendering, not to mention loads of macro functions to enhance game play and MWSE support built-in?

There's alot more to MGE than just increasing the view distance (and you don't even need to ever use that feature).
