Music In Fallout

Post » Thu Apr 08, 2010 12:02 am

This is my first post, I think, on here. I didn't even remember signing up previously. But to the point. I sent an email to Bethesda and I got a lovely form letter in return, perhaps someone will actually address later. But here is my message to them:

So I have been wondering lately, why is all the music in Fallout from
the 50's? I get that it is very much 50's themed, and it fits very well. But
going off the history of the game there are 225 years where music has not been
created. Music is a big part of any generation it defines the generation, so I
find it very odd that we only have The Ink Spots and Peggy Lee. I'm not expected
Ke$ha(thank god) or Kanye West to be in the game. But I don't understand why
people like Elvis or The Beatles or even Public Enemy or Kanye West would exist.
I'm not expecting fully produced songs with auto tune and rap beats, but
acoustic versions or lo-fi rock could easily exist in this world. Any plans on
branching out or even have new songs by people in the wasteland? There is that
guy in New Vegas with a guitar, yet he doesn't have any music.

I know this is a very odd question/remark but music is a big part of my life, as
I am sure it is in others. So I hope I'm not the only one who thinks this
.

Does anyone on here have any thoughts on this? Thank you!

Fallout mentality got stuck in the 50s. As you know. And what better way to re-enforce that feeling then actual 50s music? Everything about the game is supposed to feel like retro sci-fi 50s. The progression of time is just a side matter that weighs little on culteral development.

And from a development standpoint it is SUPER eazy to just use something pre-existing.

very true. i knew that would be the answer. Theres so much of the world that has progressed, that its odd that music didn't. Then again music is a big part of my life, so perhaps it just me that gives a damn, haha.

You need to keep in mind the "50s sci-fi" part. As ive heard said, it is a representation of what people in the 50s saw the future to be like. Just as we see the future to have flying cars and sky-scraping sky-scraqers made of shiny glass, people in the 50s saw the future to be nuclear power based, death rays and ray guns. If you notice, the projectile weaponry are all based off actual guns.

Not to mention people in the 50s were rather resistant to change, so while the underlying tech may have changed, the look and feel of a 50s future is still very much the same. This could explain why the music would sound similar in such a reality.

Also licensing the likes of Elvis or The Beatles wouldn't be cheap!

Two reasons I can think of, one is that it makes the game's 50s feel more evident the other is its cheaper and easier, writing your own song is difficult and newer music is still kept under copy right laws. The closest thing to modern music I want is some undertones music, look them up its modern songs but in an old fashioned style.
