Mod Help for a Noob

Post » Mon May 20, 2013 9:04 pm

I've been a long time Elder Scrolls fan, however, I've never been able to use mods due to the fact that I always bought the console versions of games. Well, I finally decided to jump ship and get Morrowind and Oblivion for PC.

Unfortunately, for the life of me, I am terrible at installing mods. I've tried multiple mod managers and the only thing I've gotten to work are the unofficial patches for Oblivion. It probably doesn't help that my first real mod I was attempting was Better Cities, but oh well.

Any help would be appreciated for this matter. I'm mainly looking for someone that can take the time to hold my hand through some easy installations which would allow me to work my way up...

Anyways, thanks for reading and thank you if you plan to help me. :)

Firstly, make sure your game is not installed in the Program Files directory. If it is, uninstall it and reinstall it somewhere else. For instance, C:/Games/Oblivion

After that step, try reading http://tescosi.com/wiki/Complete_Installation_Guide_for_Oblivion. It's quite informative.

I'm not online here for long enough at a time, nor regularly enough to help you, but there are lots of helpful people. Read and learn what you can on your own, and then ask whatever questions you have.

Good luck! (It's worth it in the end. It really is.)

Even if I installed the game through Steam? Sorry for being new at this, I've gotten into fits of rage over not being able to mod Morrowind years ago so I wanna get this right.

Right. You want to uninstall Steam itself and move it outside of Program Files. Then reinstall Oblivion, of course.

I must agree with gothemasticator. You never ever want to install your game in the programs folder because the Windows is known to interfere with any actions that changes the programs folder. That being said, I suggest you read the general guide here: http://tescosi.com/wiki/Main_Page.%C2%A0 if you plan on using texture replacers. Modding requires patience and effort. It's a good habit to read all the documents that comes with a mod. Most of time the answer you seek is right in there. So looks like you have some readings to do. :D
