So, uninstalling mods?

Post » Thu May 23, 2013 10:56 am

Over both of the save files I heavily play I've only uninstalled maybe a few mods. I heard this could lead to problems though. So should my save files be fine? I make sure my load order is stable every time I install/uninstall a mod by using BOSS. But I noticed something weird yesterday.

So I opened up Skyrim today and it said failure to enumerate subscribed files. Which meant it couldn't check to see if my subscribed mods were up to date. Okay. I just made sure they all still loaded. Anyways, I loaded up my main character, exited Lakeview Manor, and used the carriage ride to go to Dawnstar. I killed a dragon, accepted a radiant quest from some ship capatin. Went to the inn, bought some food and mead, went to bed, and started to make my way southwest towards Brood Cavern. anyways, when I was walking there, I quicksaved, then right after that I crashed to the desktop. I tried loading up Skyrim again and I crashed almost instantaneously when I loaded up my quicksave.

Anyways the third time around Steam was able to check if my subscribed mods were up to date, so I deleted the quicksave and loaded my previous save before the Steam issue and I was able to play for about 1 hour with no issues until I got bored.

?So what happened? I should mention that this all happened on my main level 62 character which I've had since launch week and the save file is about 20 MBs right now. Did the Steam error prevent an important mod from being loaded? I have the Unofficial Dawnguard, Hearthfire, Dragonborn, and HD Textures Patches from Steam downloaded and I made sure they were checked to load. Could that have been the issue?

I mean I thought it was the Steam issue but could it have been because of a mod mishap when i uninstalled a mod? I'm just asking because you guys might have better input on this, also copy and pasted most of this thread from a previous thread I made.

Depends on the mods you removed. If they had scripts, then your save is suspect. If they were straight up texture or object replacers, then your probably OK.

Best practice is to go back to a save before you added the mod that you want to remove. This is why you load the game and create a forked save before you install the mod. It might be OK to load a save into a newly modded game then immediately make a new save slot. The existing slot should not be changed from this.

Don't see the point in recreating the thread. Did Steam reinstall the mod it couldn't find? This is why you shouldn't use the Steam Workshop....

Crap, I uninstalled a mod which added a guild and I don't have any saves before that. But that was a couple months ago.

I don't know if Steam uninstalled a mod I needed, I went through the load files section on Skyrim's launcher to make sure all the mods were checked to load and they were. I was able to play just fine after Steam was able to check if my subscribed mods were up to date. Yeah I don't think I'm going to use Steam Workshop anymore. I have about 20 mods on Workshop though.

I feel your pain mate, hopefully your game wont end up like mine. As for the steam workshop, I'm pretty sure it's okay to use as long as you can turn off the auto-update feature. I'm not 100% sure there is one because I don't use the workshop (for this reason) but I think there is.

Looking after Mod load order with BOSS is one step, cleaning mods with TES5Edit is another, using Wrye Bash is even a better step for looking after mod load order and viewing saves and least not to say building the Bashed Patch.

If weired things are happening with your save and you confirm that you have been installing/uninstalling mods then ... Personally ... I would start a new game with my must-have mods.
