Foreshadowings

Post » Fri May 24, 2013 5:51 pm

As i just posted in another thread I went back to Oblivion last week, in doing so as I progress through the game I noted some obvious foreshadowings of Skyrim. I', going to put them down here and what I believe what might be foreshadowings FROM Skyrim. I'm not going to make this a "What's the next ES game going to be?" since that is not allowed on this forum, what I'd like is for anyone who believes they've seen foreshadowings IN Skyrim to feel free to share them. The ones I see may not be correct as it's all speculation, if you feel that way feel free to tell me so.

From Oblivion on Skyrim:

#1 The quest from Bruma to uncover the Akaviri artifact at Pale Pass which I believe to be a foray into or nearly into Skyrim itself. A wonderful quest IMO that gives the player a taste of the climate to come.

#2 Rumors of increasing Daedric worship in the Summerset Isles which may very well be the precursor to the rise of the Thalmor. Now I know and have seen very clearly what is tossed about as canon on the Thalmor aims. Thing is, is this their true aim or a smokescreen to rope the High elves back into the superior race mindset in order to bring support to the Thalmor? If you agree or disagree say so but I don't want to derail the thread into a long argument on the Thalmor unmaking Mundos or not as I've seen it over and over. I sincerely find this information to be very compelling.

#3 The book of the Skaal.: A fascinating book found in a house in the Temple District which describes the legend concerning the stones (Earth, Water, Sun etc, etc) found on Solstheim. The story ends without a name or end for the hero of the Skaal. Some interesting questions; Could Miraak be the villain described in the legend and Could one of Hermy Mora's aims be to find out that information? Probably not as it's likely to be too simplistic but just thought I'd throw it out there. :D

#4 One of the names of the newly crowned Arena Grand Champion: My Nord character's name is Alan Regnivald. Great, great grandfather of Olaf Regnivald, a Nord whom I have been playing on PC in Skyrim. Needless to say I was shocked to see "Dragonheart" as an Arena name and promptly snatched it up as it fits exquisitely in so many ways. :D The naming cannot be a coincidence in my opinion.

That's what I've found SO FAR. Now for Skyrim.

For foreshadowings I am throwing out the Foresworn and Thalmor because they are far too large a part of the storyline in Skyrim and so Tulliu's remarks about an upcoming war with the Thalmor would go out with it.

Note: This of course depends as well on depth of writing. Oblivion's writing is far deeper IMO so Foreshadowings in Skyrim could very well be more "In your face" and not as craftily hidden which makes this thread all the more speculative.

Two things I found which might be foreshadowings but will NOT be popular as Morrowind has already been visited in a past elder scrolls game.

#1 Neloth's plans to return to Morrowind in the future and

#2 This one caught me by surprise: An imperial soldier in Riften who was happy that with that city in Imperial hands a way was "Open into Morrowind" "Just in case" in his own words.

I know I'll get a lot of disagreement on those two, feel free to disagree but I'd also like to see what YOU think might be foreshadowings. :D

#1 - I don't really see how that's foreshadowing but okay.

#2 - No. The Thalmor do not worship Daedra. To even suggest so is a complete misunderstanding of the Altmer.

#3 - That was from Morrowind's expansion pack, Bloodmoon, which takes place on Solstheim and includes the Skaal. Nothing to do with Miraak.

#4 - It can and is a coincidence. The word "dragon" is used frequently throughout the games without being a reference to TES5.

I really don't think there's ever any intentional foreshadowing of the next game in any of the games. Multiple lines in all the games point to any number of directions for the next location. It's rather pointless to try and guess based off of fleeting "clues."

I respect your opinion on this, As I said this thread is purely speculation and I don't disagree with you at all. I just found these "Coincidences" to be intriguing. Since I have never had or played Morrowind there are obvious holes someone knowledgeable could certainly poke holes in.

You haven't played Morrowind then.

There is quite a bit of foreshadowing to Oblivion in vanilla, Tribunal and Bloodmoon, both subtle and overt.

You should play Morrowind, a great game though gamemechanically an utter piece of excrement.

That's right.

In Tribunal, there was even a guy preaching openly about the coming end of the world because of a Daedric invasion.

That's not even foreshadowing anymore, it's a teaser. :D

I have played Morrowind, and with the exception of SpaceMarine's example, I really don't think there's any foreshadowing in the sense of hinting toward what the next game will be. There was only that one event in Tribunal because at the time Bethesda was able to go from Morrowind to Oblivion. Now, they have a lot more on their plate, and will likely make another Fallout before moving on. There was a lot more time for TES in Morrowind's time.

It's also easy to point to things as foreshadowing that really aren't, as there's always a dozen potential areas of interest spoken about in regards to the other provinces, but that doesn't mean that's where we'll go next.

I wasn't aware the Thalmor were traditional Altmer.

AND in vanilla before Caius Cosades leaves for good he mentions being recalled and the situation in Cyrodiil and "All hell breaking loose in the near future", which is more subtle.

Though it might not be regular foreshadowing as it is subtle enough to be interpreted in a different way.
