Valton: The New Hold, OOC & Sign-Up Thread #XXV

The RP Concept

As settlers we will begin to build a new hold in Skyrim in the Rift between Ivarstead and Riften. Some may choose to go to start a new life, others looking to earn coin by building, setting up a shop or becoming town guards. Others still may just find themselves there and end up deciding to stay. This RP will be very balanced between socialization and combat. Town RPs usually focus on character interaction, and that will be true with this one, but a new settlement far out in the woods may look like a ripe target to bandit clans, and wild life may come because of the scent of food (leading to hunting to lower the population of dangerous animals as well as for meat.

Valton:

An ambitious project began in the Rift several months ago: a new settlement sprung up alongside a river, between Ivarstead and Riften. Enough land was purchased for the new settlement, Valton, to be recognized as a new, separate hold, and the man who had purchased the land, Radwulf Spurvhauke, was given the title of Jarl. Valton is still growing, with the castle, Gudslott Keep, being erected first, and then several smaller buildings were built around it, though most of them are currently empty. In an attempt to attract as many citizens as possible to the new hold, Jarl Spurvhauke has set an extremely low price on these homes: a mere 1,000 golden septims, and settlers have been coming in from all over in a hope of a better life or a chance at making some coin, and as a new settlement, there is plenty of opportunity to do so.

In this RP you will enter the Hold as a settler, or looking for work. Your character can take up any job in the new hold you can think of, but quite a lot has already been taken.

Valton also has its own http://valtonthenewhold.wikia.com/wiki/Valton,_The_New_Hold._Wiki! The character's can be found there, go take a look!

Here is the current list of jobs that are taken in Valton:

Jarl
Court Mage
Blacksmith and Enchanter
Alchemist
Lumberjack
Farmer
Mason/Carpenter
Innkeeper
Daedra Hunter / Mercenary
Mage
Thief

Hunter

General Trader

Captain of the Guard

Artist

Stablemaster

Imperial Diplomat

Butcher

(do note that some jobs that aren't on the list might still be taken, but it's highly unlikely any of them are free. Your best bet is to always check with a GM if this list is up-do-date or not).

And here is a character sheet template. Please use this when submitting a CS:

In case you haven't seen it yet, http://valtonthenewhold.wikia.com/wiki/Valton,_The_New_Hold._Wiki has maps of the hold and its location, on the right. Plus, http://s1050.photobucket.com/user/Smigh/library/?sort=6&page=1 might give you a good indication of Valton's look & feel.

I did glance at the wiki but mainly just at the characters, thanks for that, the pictures help a lot.

I'm afraid we have a new stable-master, so that part of your character is no longer a possiblity.

You could return with the character, assuming you create a new char-sheet that updates the past month in Valton into his story, explaining why he is no longer the stable-master and what he is now. The homeless beggar spot is open for grabs!

Or, you can create an entirely new character. :)

I have lowered my characters age down to twenty four. The age didn't seem to fit the character I've found myself writing, I hope the adjustment is okay.

Really? I thought your character was already quite young to be a butcher. Lowering it further has almost made my eyebrow pop up from forehead in confusion.

It is your character and I won't say no to any changes you've done this early to the character. But I do feel the need to voice my opinion on the young-aged-butcher. :D

Honestly I know very little about butchers so excuse my lack of knowledge, but why is it strange for someone as young as Thomas to be a butcher?

It's really the stereotypical butcher figure that pops into mind: A large, fat middle-aged guy. :teehee: It's something I connect with being an ex-soldier or ex-hunter or ex-anything-that-requires-fitness and then ending up as a butcher.

Good to see you're breaking that stereotypical image! I simply made my eyebrows levitate

Ah, yeah, he originally was going to be a lot older but I thought the concept of one being so young yet being at that stage in life where he is forced to fall back on something such as being a butcher despite his youth would be pretty fun. I get what you mean though, the first thing that comes into my head when the word butcher is spoken is Daniel-Day Lewis's character in Gangs of New York; Bill the Butcher.

Hey Gorbad, since ore comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, let's say that there is a measurment type called "Ore" when it comes to mining and selling metals. When the ore is taken out of the mine they measure the ore/plain rock-ratio and see how much of that specific ore is needed to fill one measurment. For the heck of it, let's say one Ore is the same as one kilo of raw metal.

But wouldn't different metals cause different sized ores's's's's's? :D

We can, for the sake of easy, use ore and ingots as the measurement. Two ore = 1 ingot. 1 ingot = 1 or 2 kilo. :D

Yeah I suppose there would be very different prices, but I just wanted to get some kind of system for it. In-game every piece of ore is the exact same size and weight, but in a real mine a piece of ore can come in every shape and size so when someone wants to buy 25 pieces of ore they could walk away with 25 pebbles in their hand :P

Yes well, for an ore to count as an ore it would have to be half an ingot in weight :D Most metal-business would be in terms of ingots though, as it's easy money to sell a refined product further. Only from miners and mines would you get your hands on ore directly.

But we don't have to add weight and such things into the RP. We'll just say a chunk of ore and it'll be a chunk of ore of fixed size, rather than a chunk of ore than can be anything from the size of a coin to the size of a watermelon. (if they come at the same price, I'll take the watermelon-sized thank you kindly sir miner!)

I guess Thomas's next stop would be to the local tavern to try and get word of any hunters that may dwell around town.

Greorn seems like a logical choice, since he's not interacting and he's walking to the same place.

The problem is, how often does Gavril post? I'd rather not wait 3+ days, just to interact with someone.

In my current scene, I waited 4 days, then posted out of order. After a few OOC posts, I thought it was sorted out, but it's been 4 days more waiting for one person to post. Real life gets in the way of the best of intentions, and I get the feeling that 3+ days is fast for some people. I get nervous if more than a day passes without a response, but that is just me.

I love your signature Auroness, I remember taking that quest and not being able to stop laughing at that part, t'was a brilliant piece of writing. Anyway, I agree, personally I prefer to respond within twenty four hours otherwise I start to feel bad about holding another person up and my writing gets crappy even when I do get to replying because I can't help but rush the reply.

I'd say up to 3 days is normal in this RP, but it's usually less. A week is definitely too much, but it happens sometimes.

The Inn's not just closed, it's actively under construction right? Or am I mixing up my details again?

After I figure out a not-awkward way to transition out of my interaction with Gorbad, Vidar will probably just be wandering about town soaking in details so if you really need to engage with someone. I'll try to have something today, I really love this Emergent Storytelling, but man does it have it's own unique set of challenges to cope with.
