Just by looking at the other polls (and previous ones) you can tell people find looks more important than the actual characters themselves.

1. Annekke. I haven't tried Derkeethus.
2. Marcurio. First and foremost, I'm in love with him and would marry him if he was real

and second, I haven't tried Serana.
3. Teldryn. In this case only because of what I've heard of him - haven't tried him, but I haven't tried the DB initiate either (and I don't like the idea of a nameless follower). But Teldryn is Dunmer, looks BA, and is said to have an actual personality.
4. Lydia. I haven't tried Mjoll.
5. Jenassa. I haven't tried Frea.

Notice a trend here, perhaps?

My extra vote goes after some hesitation to the adorable Erik, who manages to look like a happy puppy while bashing enemies to death with a warhammer. He also gets extra points for eye-candy, of course.

I've played the DLC, so I don't get the Serana references.

Anyway, how is J'zargo losing? In my first playthrough, he was the best follower ever. And here he's losing to [censored] Lydia.

J'zargo - I think J'zargo might be my favorite follower. He's saved my a** countless times with his paralyze spell and he's a total boss. Plus, that mustache, how can you hate that stache?

Why is Lydia still in this contest? Anyways, Frea is a good Follower, But Jenessa is Better for my playstyle, Her sneak skill is higher and she's a good archer. Serana, just 'cause she was developed really well for a follower. In the choice between Darkeethus and Annekke, I'd have to say Darkeethus, as Annekke belongs with her Family, not on my wild adventures where we don;t know how long it will be until we go home. Teldryn Sero is a chatty guy, I don't like it, plus, Initiates need their practice to become Master assassins, and well, Aela is really awesome.
