I cleaned out Raven Rock and am in the process of walking back to Megaton with all the loot.

Currently over five thousand pounds of gear.

If you don't mind fast-traveling (I am not allowed on my current character) you can store all your loot on the weapons locker inside the door (the one behind the stasis field you have to unlock).
Important: When you crack the door to the outside and hear the choppers, immediately fast-travel, so you never speak to Fawkes. Go home dump your stuff and return. As long as you never talked to Fawkes in the beginning, the door will remain open forever. You cannot access all of Raven Rock, just up to that weapons locker. As soon as you fast travel back to Raven Rock, the explosion animation starts over, Fawkes runs over, and if you have a good character, I enlist him to carry my stuff back home, then fire him when all my loot is safe. You can make multiple trips.

I'm almost home. It's silly, but the reason I'm doing it is I want to see how many rounds of 30-06 ammo I can trade all that gear for with the Outcasts.

My Lewis Mk II needs ammo for the final battle (currently rated at 679 damage....24x12 plus expert bonuses).

Heck yeah! It's really challenging, isn't it?

Excellent practice, too-- you get skilled at using environmental obstacles like rocks and trees, staying below ridgelines, etc. It's very useful for saving ammo, and you take a lot fewer hits in a firefight if you get good at it.

Other fun things to try: try running the subways, too. I went from Friendship to Rivet City without stopping to fight. I did die a couple of times and got lost scrambling around a bunch, but it was awesome.

At RC I ran in and the Talon mercs at the last metro chased me and had a shootout with the guard... I felt like that was kind of mean, so I ran back out and threw in with the Xuan Long. (The idea of leaving the bridge out and one lonely guard outside a big settlement is a little dumb, but that's been noted before...) And a few times in the metros I led Ferals into Raiders, which is soooo great! Ferals run pretty fast, but they have to stop and hiss at you first, so you can get a good head start.

Yeah, those guys are hard! They can run right up lots of rocks. So can Yao Guai and Vicious Dogs-- you get good at seeing every possible escape angle: climbing down steep cliffs, hopping up stuff that looks too steep to climb, etc. They will lose interest if you put enough barriers between you and them, though. I do like to give Old Olney a nice wide bypass, but random deathclaws will still pop out here and there.

So... you could roleplay and bring no weapons with you, or just a maxed Unarmed skill and some Spiked Knuckles or such. The characters I've run with have taken a slightly more practical approach: they're still [censored] post-apocalypse daredevils and arguably a touch suicidal, but they do bring ONE powerful close range gun, like the Xuan Long, or the Terrible Shotty for desperate traps. And, say, 20 stimpacks, and a little food and water. Got to travel light to go fast, ya know!

Come to think of it, maybe I should run one last one before NV closes out my FO3. I think I'll make him a total speed freak, all scrambled out his brain on dope-- you get amphetimines and meth with the FWE mod-- and just run 'til I die. If I make it, I'll wash out the drugs with beer.

:ahhh: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!, etc.

This could be a seriously fun quest for some moder, some either rich bastard like Tenpenny or perhaps an alien offer you a kings ransom like loads of alien epoxy, a rocket launcher who work as a sniper rifle and fire mini nukes, or something like that. Challenge run from raven rock to rivet city, you get a melee weapon who do 1 damage and if you equip anything else, use stealthboys or fast travel you have to start over.

Those deathclaws are fast :bolt: taken leaps of faith off cliffs and bridges over water to get away from them, wish you could record those drops into water somehow :P
