I was sifting through my movie archive yesterday, trying to decide what to watch for a late-night movie session, and found the Book of Eli, which instantly brought Fallout to mind (New Vegas for me, especifically). And it occurred to me that right there in the Fallout universe are great movie plots just waiting to be picked up and developed, such is the amount of remarkable characters and stories spread among 4-5 top games.
In my opinion, New Vegas would appeal to a more Hollywoodian movie style due to its close relationship with the North American culture, while the setting in Fallout 3, for example, would be more suitable to the European way of moviemaking, as they generally have a darker approach to the plot and characters, much alike the general mood of the Capital Wasteland.
Not to mention the casting possibilities which would most probably lead to memorable acting pieces. Just to mention a few examples, I can totally see Gary Oldman as Mr. House; Donald Sutherland as Chief Hanlon; Terence Stamp or Tobin Bell (Jigsaw from the SAW movies, for those who don't know him) as Caesar; James Remar as Lee Oliver; someone like Karl Urban/Michelle Rodriguez as the Courier...and many, many others.
Just some idle-at-work piece of brainstorming of mine, but I think it would be a huge success if done by the right people. I think there's a lot of potential to appeal not only fans of the games, but also common audiences with no previous contact with the Fallout mythos. Maybe one day.
Share your opinions, or dreams (or lack of) about a (possible?) Fallout movie piece. I'm sure many of you have at least imagined that awesome actor/actress in the skin of your favorite character.
