Why don't they jump?

Why is it that NPCs and other mobs in TES games and Fallout games don't jump over obstacles? If an enemy is chasing me I can easily out fox them by hopping over a hill. I notice that in Minecraft mobs can jump to get to me you know like when the creeper gives chase.

Just asking because by now I would expect better in Skyrim and gamesass next games.

Because NPC pathing is not set up for them to use the tops of rocks or ledges or furniture. Unless there is a NavMesh on the object, the NPCs are not going to travel there.

Well there should be!

It is sometimes immersion breaking when a legit way to avoid an enemy so you can lace them with arrows is jumping on top of a barrel. Still how you explained it makes sense. It is very rare to see enemies jump in video games over objects to get to you unless it is scripted.

Other than a few special individuals, the residents of Mundus are all afflicted with acute acrophobia. Even the thought of having to jump over something as high as a chair will usually cause them to flee in panic. This is primarily the result of the publishing of a journal detailing the Icarian Flight Experiment.

I think that Skyrim has navmeshing that can accomodate leap-downs. I've seen NPCs doing that before, and also heard other modders talking about it when talking about navmeshes.

Yeah, that's what my mind immediately jumped (heh) to when I saw this topic.

Is it bad that I've only just realised this?
