Survival Poll

Post » Thu May 30, 2013 11:58 am

A fairly simple poll on what the preferences of community are when it comes to "Survival" style features to increase immersion.

This poll interested me after reading a long thread, where there was a spirited back and forth on "Survival" features (also called hardcoe).

We all understand that development resources are limited. So the inclusion of features like this, means something else needs to be excluded. So, I was curious what people were thinking.

Of course, I should admit my bias.

My view is that Skyrim is a story about the Dragonborn. So eating cheese and sleeping are not what the developers envisioned as the core experience and that every choice made was in support of that core narrative. But what I think doesn't matter what do you folks think?

Meh... No. I'd rather they devote their resources elsewhere.

If some of the devs want to make a DLC or mod or whatever on their own time, sure. But spending development time on it, no, not a chance.

I think this may point to a difference between those who want "survival" and those who don't. I do not see this game as a story about the Dragonborn. Myself, I've done the main quest just once, and I may never do it again. The story about the Dragonborn really only applies to one of my characters. For the rest, they are ordinary people doing other kinds of work.

I play Farmers and tavern wenches who get caught up in the civil war, street urchins who get caught up in the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. A student at the college who did nothing but search for magic books with which to supply the college library. One character was a miner. Her game consisted of mining ore and selling it to blacksmiths.

Survival mods fits perfectly with these types of character, in my opinion. They are not heroines. They lead fairly ordinary lives. I basically ignore the main quest in all the Elder Scrolls games. I do so because I like to roleplay ordinary lives. And ordinary lives are filled with ordinary activities like eating and sleeping and huddling around a fire to keep warm.

But this is all academic to me. I use mods so I can do whatever I want. I really do not care a whit about "what the developers envisioned." When I buy a copy of Skyrim it becomes my game. The only thing that matters is what I envision.
