Can't get Oblicvion to run....

Post » Fri May 31, 2013 2:22 am

Windows 7 64 Bit.

Running:

BOSS

Wyre Bash

OBMM

OBSE 1.2.416

Oblivion has been patched up to 1.2.416 as well using the non-SI patch.

I don't have GOTY but do have the original retail disk of Oblivion, Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles.

Running a myriad of mods.

I'm getting an error 740 even though I've got everything set to run as an Admin. I've even gone so far as to run everything in XP with SP3 compatibility mode.

The game is installed on a Samsung 1tb drive aptly named; A:\GAMES and it is not on my system drive.

I was not able to get the game patched using the SI version of the 1.2.416 patch because it told me that it couldn't find the correct patch even though it saw the version number. When I looked it showed me I was at some weird version number of 1.1 and 1.2.210 or something like that. But there was a .dll file in the directiory with the 1.2.416 patch number. I deleted it and it still would not patch using the SI version. It did work when I used the non-SI version.

Has anyone else run into this? Is there a fix or am I stuck being unable to play this game? The frustrating thing is that Morrowind runs fine but I can't get Oblivion to run.

I believe my mod load order is correct, nothing is showing up red in BASH and I use BOSS to sort them. I've tried to run the game with the DLC, without the DLC, with the mods, without the mods. It CTD's with a, "Oblivion has stopped responding" error on top of the 740 error.

Just to see if anything changes, try installing it in it's own directory on a mechanical drive.

But it is in it's own directory on the A drive; the drive is mechanical. I don't have any SSDs as I went with size over price. It's path is:

A:|Games\TES IV Oblivion\

Are you talking about moving it to a nother drive entirely that has absolutely nothing on it?

I'm contemplating purchasing the GOTY edition from Steam for $20 and seeing if it works that way then just install all of the DLC that doesn't come with the GOTY edition from the Knights of the Nine Deluxe disk I have. Maybe that would work? I'd honestly hate to buy a second copy of it if I already have a version on Disk. I own both SI, Knights of the Nine plus all the other little DLCs including Horse Armor that I had bought the physical disks of when they were released. Although, I do have two copies of Horse Armor because i bought the D2D version when it released but have since forgotten my D2D login stuff.

The procedure, as I understand it, is to install Oblivion and SI, and then the SI 1.2.0416 Patch. You may be getting the error because of installing the non-SI patch.

I'm confused, though. Did this game run before you installed all the mods?

The last time it was on my computer it ran perfectly. That was in 2010. I've since then built two computers. I didn't have this problem in 2010. The only thing that has honestly really changed is that I jumped from a 32 bit OS to a 64. I was running Windows 7 in 2010 as well.

The 2010 computer was built in 2004.

Then I built one in 2011. And again in 2013.

I just reinstalled it last night hoping to play it again running pretty much all of the mods I was running back in 2010.

I was getting the 740 error before I got it patched. I was only able to patch it using the non-SI patch because the SI patch won't work even though I have SI. It was also CTDing with a "Oblivion has stopped responding" error before the patching and modding.

I'll delete everything minus the mods from the folder and reinstall Oblivion and SI and then the patch and see if that helps. It seems that in the 6 years since the 416 patch has come out this is still a common problem with no fix. I remember Oblivion being poorly optimized when it came out in 2005 but I'd of though that in 2013 it'd be a little better.

I would get rid of all the mods first, delete the Oblivion.ini, uninstall/reinstall the game, and get it patched and running correctly before adding a single mod.
