Why is training so expensive?

Post » Fri May 31, 2013 2:48 pm

An easy way to get free training is to simply buy the lessons, then pickpocket the money back. This worked wonders for my thief, who could hardly ever find the time or situations to level smithing, one handed, and light armor.

However, once you get to level 51 in any skill, the price for training TRIPLES! At level 50 it's 500 something, then once you go to 51, it goes up to almost 1600 gosh darn Septims!

Now I understand this isn't really an issue for those of you who loot anything and everything, do tons of dungeon raids, are a high level, and have enough Septims to crap on. But due to RP constraints, my character is always very low on money, not usually carrying more than two or three thousand gold at a time. Plus, with the price inflation, pickpocketing the money back is buttloads harder. Even now with my pickpocket skill finally at 100, I only get about a 20% likelihood of "getting my money back."

Anyone else have a problem with that sudden squeeze out of their coin purse?

It svcks, but do you really expect it to be cheaper?

Well no, but I just don't understand the huge boom. I don't think it's necessary to more than triple the price out of the blue, after one level difference.

That's why I tend to save my training money until I can use to level up.

Restoration is a pain in the ass to level normally. I normally go the Hall of the Vigilants or the Shrine to Kynereth for my training needs.

Buying training svcks, I normally stop doing that at around level 50 and level on my own after that. 'Normally' Once I got to 80 on enchanting I started paying for skill advances since I want to get to 100 faster but that is the exception and not the norm. And yes I have over half a mill septims in 'the bank'

The great leaps occur when you pass trainer expertise thresholds. Once you pass 50, it drastically increases in price. Same for 75. No one trains over 90 though.

I do agree that it is too expensive. Of course an expert wants to be paid for his services, but the way it costs, what, 15,000 gold to train from 60 to 70 is just absurd. That's like five years' pay in Skyrim.

Exactly. It's such a huge jump that even most decently rich characters would find it burning a whole through their wallets. It should have been at least a gradual increase from 51-90. instead of a randomly huge leap.

My Mages are always poor, if it is not expensive Training, it is paying for the Spell Tomes for next level Spells. The wealthiest NPC for most of My characters is Danica Clear-Spring, and Collette in the College of Winterhold would be the second Wealthiest, if She was not a Vendor and a Trainer.

I used to do that, but then I found how wonderfully giants can help in raising your Restoration plus Armor skill :D

Ehh... It's pretty easy to get rich in Skyrim, I usually total 150k (Including gold spent) by the time I'm level 20. But this is mostly because I'm a cheapskate, I only buy the absolute necessities, and sell whatever I don't use, I don't stockpile for future use.

That's if you loot everything. A few of my characters don't loot dead bodies or tombs; only chests. They do not take armor, and some are not the "adventuring" type; meaning characters like thieves do not do dungeon delving. It's harder to make money that way.

Training is pretty much leveling up your skills with a click of a single button. Of course it will cost you some coin, even more at higher levels.

I earn even more gold from a thief character than an adventuring-type character. Thief-type characters earns less gold per raid, but gets gold faster thus earning more in the long run, especially if you get the "Prowler's Profit" early on.

That is similar to my playstyle, and I could afford buying training for one-handed and archery up to level 70 or so. This is because as a sneak thief, my onehanded and archery skills are naturally low.
But I did get speech up to 60+ and got that perk where I could sell anything to any vendor, so that might have helped me get lots of gold from selling stuff.

This problem is easily sorted out with the first word of Ice Form or the Paralyze spell. For this to work you first need to join a guild which has trainers who train the skills you use, this is important because using most shouts on fellow guild members won't make them hostile, Ice Form being one of them, so in this example I will use a Pure Mage joining the CoW.

Head to Faralda or whoever and pay for all 5 levels of training, whether it's from 30-35 or 85-90 it doesn't matter, just do it. Then exit the conversation menu and use only the first word of Ice Form. Once they are an ice block, enter sneak mode as if to pick pocket, and with the cursor on the frozen individual, repeatedly press the A button until the person unfreezes and you will enter their pockets and you will be able to take anything and everything, even if it says 0% chance.

Paralyze is for non guild trainers, but it's dodgy until you have invisibility spell/potion because of the bounty. If you paralyze them proceed to pickpocket them.

The cost of training isn't a problem. Problem is the limit 5 trainings per lvl.

I kinda like that it is expensive.

I try and get five training sessions each level, that way I'm mostly struggling to pay for them until at least level 40 and that means that I have goals.

There isn't much to do with money anyway in Skyrim, certainly all the merchants only carry 'vendor trash,' houses, spells and training, that's about it.

So training every level makes it that I don't get bored too soon because I'm brimming with cash and nothing to spend it on. Until mid to high level I'm always happy with some 'fat loot'.

But with the essentially removed level cap (legendary skills), you could level indefinitely, then.

I also do not mind the high training cost or the sudden increase. The sudden jump at 50 may be a bit high, but it certainly makes sense, as you're practically paying for a higher education then.
