How high... is the Throat of the World?

Post » Tue Jun 04, 2013 3:14 am

...relatively speaking that is...

If the Throat of the World was a mountain on Earth, how high would it actually be?

What would it compare to?

Mount Everest, as Carrots said, would probably be the best example. Or really, most of the mountains in that Nepalese mountain range.

Lore says that it takes seven thousand steps to get to the top, so count from that.

Given that it's a common target for pilgrimage, it can't be more than a kilometer. Do you people have any idea what it takes to get to the top of Mount Everest, let alone live there?

Well I wouldn't say it would be mount Everest type height but maybe mount blanc or even Vesuvius remember that the red mountain is or was the tallest mountainous object in tamriel an that would of been about Everest size but I guess we could just ask Todd Howard or someone.

It's 7000 steps to high hrothgar not the actual peak where a certain pick axe can be found

The Seven Thousand Steps are to High Hrothgar. The summit is probably as far again.

Not as high as Everest, more like the higher peaks of the Alps or the Rockies I'd guess.

Red Mountain is the largest volcano. The Throat of the World is the tallest mountain in Tamriel.

...

OT: I'd guess anywhere between 7000 and 15,000 feet.

Although, it could be Everest scale because what do we know about Nirn's air density and all the other factors that make living at such high altitude impossible for any length of time.

Besides that if you look at Red mountain from Solstheim it looks to be much larger then Mount Everest and the Throat of the world, if you look at the Throat of the world it looks to be about the same size as Mt.Everest. Now I'm only judging this by eye, but IMO the Throat of the world is about Mt.Everest size and Red mountain is about 2 times larger. In other words it seems to look as though it's at least twice the size of the Throat of the world. Judging by my eye.

^ This is kind of what I'm getting at.

In a 'real-life' walk to the top, it feels a hell of a lot smaller than the hours/days it would take to climb a mountain on Earth...

I know lore-wise it's meant to be epic. So in-game I guess it is scaled down...

I guess what I mean to ask is how high do we think the scaled down version in-game is, when compared to real life sizes?

As high as a skyscraqer? Higher?

Or just a really big hill?

Just had a thought. The 7,000 steps start at Ivarstead.

How far up the mountain is Ivarstead?

Good point...Should have thought on that one myself :D

The base of the Throat of the world isn't actually at Ivarstead, it's really down towards the hot springs. Once you reach the " end " of the river that flows through Ivarstaed you will have reached the base of the mountain.

Good show ol'bean

Looking up at the throat of the world it doesn't look much taller than the other mountains in Skyrim. But when your at the top pf the throat of the world it clearly dwarfs the other mountains.. wierd.

id say that ivarstead is at the bottom as the steps dont start until you cross the bridge an get past the first shrine an then we all know its longer then 7000 steps though.

Sorry but no.

As Carrots and Shaherazad have said Ivarstead is some way up the mountain, the foot of which is the hot springs in Eastmarch.

I think we need to take into account Skyrim's elevation when also comparing the 7,000 steps. The Throat of the World might not be high compared to other land amsses in Skyrim, but if Skyrim's elevation is higher than Morrowinds, the Throat of the World might be larger/higher reaching than Red Mountain.
