Finding a good fight without dungeon diving

Post » Fri Jun 07, 2013 7:18 am

Ever get that new perk or weapon or whatever and realize you gotta test it out against a bunch of baddies before you continue your quest? Preferably, you'll head someplace teeming with baddies, but without a lot of spaces to enter/exit. For example, my absolute favorite is Liar's Retreat: the very first room is just choked with Falmer. Halted Stream Camp and Silent Moons Camp are also good if you want to tangle with bandits and mages. You don't even have to go into the mines or interiors. The foresworn over at Karthspire camp and Lost Valley Redoubt are also quite fun.

All of these are easy to access, unlike boss fights which only occur at the end of a dungeon. I've got Dragonborn as well so any suggestions over at Solstheim are much appreciated.

I don't think I get those urges. I do like those outdoor fights though.

Really? Not even when you got your first Fireball spell? You didn't want to see how a dual-cast fireball can stagger and scatter a bunch of Forsworn? How about when you got Powershot followed by Quickshot on the Archery tree? I couldn't wait to try those out against a large camp.

Not quite. When I get a new weapon/perk, I usually understand how it will handle in combat. I've never had the urge to just go out and slaughter everything.

When I get acquire a powerful weapon through such as doing a quest, I do try it out on some enemy, just to see, but nearly all of these powerful weapons are a bit over-hyped and not really anything like the game build-up impression gives you.

I usually store it away in my house, and continue with my under powered play, using my wits and tactics to win which for me is so much more fun. Interesting to see what the weapon did though.

Any bandit camps usually have lots of enemies and are mostly outside. Same with forts.

On Solstheim there are a number of outdoor locations but usually not with a large number of enemies. Maybe three or four at the most USUALLY except for the Reiklings. On the periphery are a two pirate locations where they are digging up treasure, one to the north of the Skaal village on a tiny island and one on the southwest coast. Both of these contain a note that will start the "Deathbrand" quest. There is another small island on the southwest tip that has a couple of horkers. There are a number of Reikling fortification scattered around the island, two on the south coast which are like small villages.

If at Whiterun there is another bandit camp not generally spoken of which is a small cave which is more like an overhang that sits beneath the very hill Whiterun is on, to the east of the Halted Stream Camp and a little south. Two bandits followed by three more showing up after you loot the chest. It sits nearly beneath the city walls.

Also on Solstheim to the north of Miraak's temple is a ruin with several draugher outdoors and a serpentine dragon.

Right - I forgot about that bandit camp. The initial pair aren't that tough but I like to conjure a Dremora Lord and lay down a dual-cast Lightning Rune before looting the chest because the bandits that show up subsequently are tough, tough, tough. In fact, this camp is not a favorite because a single new spell or weapon isn't usually enough to overwhelm them. You still need stealth and strategy.

Quite right, and speaking of forts, that reminds me of Northwatch Keep. It's a very good fight but I only attack for the specific quest which shall remain un-named. I'm worried that if I just attack on a whim I'll end up with a bounty etc. The interior is just one big zone also which is excellent fun.

I think you're talking about Hamvir's Rest. There's some good loot there and the Draugr is pretty tough (you gotta get him fast or starts to conjure and freeze etc.) but I'm really asking about locations with many opponents as opposed to one, really tough baddy.

That reminds me, Valtheim Towers is a good one also.

Treva's Watch in the Rift.

Faldar's Tooth, also in the Rift.

If I can remember another tough Dungeon I will Edit this post.
