My games don't acknowledge graphic card

Post » Fri Jun 07, 2013 11:40 am

My brand new laptop has two graphic card: one that comes with the CPU and another one. My games locate only the card that comes with the CPU. Windows 8 says that my drivers are up to date (obviously). I'm pretty sure I'm missing something but I have no idea what it could be.

I need help and advice. Any pointer would be great. Thank you!

So your laptop came with an accelerated graphics system, but it doesn't know to use it? How silly.

Check the manual and see how to enter the BIOS menu (usually by hitting DEL at the boot screen). See if there's an option to select which graphics adapter is the primary one, and make sure it's set use to the enhanced one.

I'm no laptop guru, but usually in the BIOS of any system there are options to prioritize or disable/enable various components.

What laptop are you using?
I had this problem with Steam games. For some reason my dedicated GPU worked with all other games, but not with Steam. I had to change it in Nvidia Control Panel.

To elaborate on what Rosveen says: If you have Nvidia cards, then start Nvidia Control Panel and select "Set PhysX Configuration" or "Set SLI and PhysX Configuration". It should look like the image in the second post on this forum thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2317373

If "Maximise 3D performance" is checked, then SLI is enabled and both cards are used.

Thanks all for the replies. I've seen countless topics on the matter on these forums; the problem occurred on any kind of laptop with any kind of cards so I didn't mention that my laptop was http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GX60-Hitman-Edition.html. I thought that the solution was quite the same for all of them, kinda "aw, happened to me too! I did this and it worked!". Sorry! :)

The "use DEL" tip was the good one. I've been able to enter the BIOS but I haven't seen anything related to choosing which graphics card to use as the primary. It shows only the integrated card in fact. It seems that my problem comes from this: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/LaptopsFAQ.aspx#T3 as the laptop is using this technology.

If I understand correctly she doesn't have two graphic cards, the other one is a chip integrated with CPU.

In any case, you should be able to perform a similar procedure in Catalyst Control Center. Go to switchable graphics tab and assign performance mode to your games and Steam.

It could also be a driver problem, but I'm not familiar with AMD drivers so I can't help here. Check if you really have the latest version, my laptop was sometimes a bit slow to notify me about updates.

Thanks! I'll take a closer look at the control centre soon. :)
