The essence of Dunmer magic

This comment on the recent thu'um thread disturbed me a little:

This may just be a memory lapse, but are the Dunmer really lacking in a more defined form of magic than these other races? I can see how it's focused on conjuration and the gaps n the cosmos, thanks to Veloth and his cronies turning to the Daedra and being warped by Azura, but has this ever been a more defined type of magic other than a list of game mechanics?

Even know most Dunmer abhor it, they excel at necromatic arts; Divayth Fyr is 4000 years old, FAR beyond normal age for a Dunmer.

There is belly magic, which I don't think should be dismissed as just six. For all we know, it makes shadow babies or something. However, I think that the magic that springs foremost to mind is how the Dunmer bind their ancestor spirits, since it has such a big, cultural impact.
