Turning weight penalty into a combat dynamic

Post » Thu Jun 13, 2013 2:19 am

In skyrim weight limits how much you can carry and the speed of your weapon swings(not 100% sure)

We could add a little depth and help strengthen the role of the warrior/fighter style by

turning that useless weight into momentum!

How?

Either make weight affect charge in terms of damage

or have a charge bonus stat on items that is higher in heavier weapons and armor

This helps us players who want to be a berserker and give us an advantage to pay off for the additional weight.

More weapon variety

Should give warrior weapons a more meaty feel in at least one aspect of combat

Should make charge more fun and give us something for getting the drop on an opponent

What do you guys think?

I think that combat dynamics need to reflect the skills (and ATTRIBUTES) of the character more appropriately. A hulking barbarian fighter should move and react very differently from an agile fencer, although both could be equally "skilled" in their own way. It always depressed me how a Mage fought and felt almost exactly like a Fighter, except for the damage numbers and a few special moves or semi-random critical effects.

Weapon speed has been in effect since Morrowind or before, and Morrowind allowed three different forms of attack (poorly implemented, so there was no real point in using anything other than the one the weapon was best at). The combat system has made several "lateral moves", but isn't "better" or more realistic overall in my option, just smoother looking and aimed at a different audience.

Skills and Attributes, with Perks to add flavor, could be used to create a system that rewards both player skills and character abilities, not just another mainly "FPS" or mainly "die-roll RPG" system.

I agree, fencing would be cool and having different kill moves for both styles would be great! A weighty barbarian would be bashing skulls in while a fencer would be precisely stab at the weak spots.
