Pete Hines confirms work on new SP RPG!

Pete Hines:

"Zenimax Online Studio is an MMO shop,"

"They just announced that they're moving the whole team onto something else. Give these guys time and space, expect it never and be surprised if it's any time before then."

"I get to see it and it's already really awesome, but it's probably helpful to note that anyone who thinks that what he's working on next is going to be talked about soon doesn't understand game development."

I smell radiation!

It was already a given that BGS was working on their next game. At least to me, the assumption was always that they moved on to Fallout 4 so this doesn't really seem like that big of a news story.

I don't really see this as anything new, tbh. It just repeats what we already have known: Todd and the BGS team moved on to their next project. It is already 99.999% sure it is Fallout 4.

What ever it is they're making, I kinda hope it isn't Fallout.

I guess this is a surprise to those who thought Bethesda and the employees were retiring after Skyrim

Because we can all make an educated guess what sort of game is in the making, and the way it'll most likely be I'd rather it not be Fallout.

So in other words, you want a new IP from BGS?

Well we are unlikely to get any confirmation of which game it will be for quite some time but I for one am looking forward to a new Fallout game. :)

I see what you mean. I am all for new stuff but a new IP now from BGS would be horrible timing, with everyone expecting Fallout from them.

That's just a stupid position to take. They're the only one who might make a fallout game, so if you don't want them making a game, you're basically saying you want fallout games to cease. Which is pointless, because you don't have to play new games.

No... [I think] he's saying that he would rather they had a different studio do the next Fallout game; but unfortunately, even if that happened, the other studio would still be on a tight leash, and probably produce an only slightly different take on the same 'type of game' that he doesn't want from Bethesda themselves.

I can't say that I disagree with him; (I would rather they contract Obsidian to do it... I'd pay triple retail for my copy if Obsidian could do the game entirely off the leash.)

But I can say that I think Bethesda could probably do a better job on on the 3D assets and landscaping than most (including Obsidian) ~IMO.

Well, Fallout 4 ending up as Skyrim with Guns is about as big news as that BGS is working on a new game :hehe:

Until FO4 is released, and either it will pleasantly surprise you, or confirm what you had already suspected, you are pre judging something that no one outside of BGS knows anything about.

...and I've lost count of how many times I've seen some of the dinos gripe that we FO3 fans (some of whom have never played the originals) pre judge the originals without ever playing them. This doesn't seem right to me.

All I'm saying, is to at least give them a chance to fail before you try, judge, and execute them for getting it wrong again.

Well, the best way to predict future behaviour is past behaviour, and only thing BGS has made in a long while are open world dungeon crawlers with constantly diminishing RPG mechanics and increasingly unsuable user interfaces. No, i'm never going to shut up about that. Or Oblivion's level scaling (great way to make the game more difficult, against the same opponents you slaughterd at the bgeinning!) or so very, very Broken Steel (great job in breaking the character deveploment while trying to compensate it with ridiculously overpowered enemies that do damage that cannot be resisted! :goodjob:)

So, it will also have some major fault, but it will be moddable :hehe:

Well, I agree with you that they do have a history, but judging a game before it's ever released, is still pre judgement.

Make no mistake, I still have real fears that we will see more of Skyrim in the next Fallout, but I'm still willing to let them make the attempt to do it. I may come away disappointed, but I will still play the game.

As long as it doesn't use the Elder Scrolls leveling system, I will definitely give Fallout 4 a chance. I do believe that Bethesda has the ability to make a great Fallout game (although I do think they need some new writing talent, particularly in regards to characterization). But I question whether they have the ambition to make a great Fallout game, rather than taking the easier route of just continuing to make a TES knockoff with guns.

Time will tell. I'll expect the worst and hope for the best. Come on, Bethesda... surprise me! Make me eat my words! I would be so happy to be wrong about you.
