The Fearsome Winter

Post » Tue Apr 13, 2010 6:22 am

What changes, big or small, do you want to see because of the cold in the game? In the upper mountains it will be cold all the time to much effect, but people should batten down the hatches in the valleys too when winter hits. What things would you like to see?

I'd like it if people complained if you walked into a tavern late at night and let a cold gust of air into the place, and the fire should flicker some from the wind. People should also put on heavier clothing for the winter, including you. There can be winterized forms of the armor with extra fur to keep you from freezing, and cloaks/capes to warm you. People around town can wear heavier coats in the cold weather months or during a snow, and could be seen outside clearing the snow from the front of their business.

On a more extreme high mountain town, people could be walking out of the second story balconies right onto the heavy snow with their snowshoes on because it piled up that high. And have people talk about stocking up for winter, with shops curiously busy in the fall. What sort of indications of weather would you like to see represented in the game?

bodies of water icing over with thin ice you could possibly fall through. the sound of cracking would be your only clue of danger.

snow melting during the warmer months and flooding the low lands.

That would be awesome  . It would be cool if you could slide on the ice too, maybe make an ice cavern where the only way in is sliding down a hole in the ice. Your walking along the base of an ice covered mountain completely unaware that your next step will cause you plummeting down an icy narrow slide into a mountainous cavern.

This was probably said in a thread before, but I wish they would have seasons in this game. Even Pokemon White and Black have seasonal changes, and that's for the DS.

Heck, Daggerfall from fifteen years ago had seasons, I'm expecting that as a given in Skyrim. Daggerfall even had seasonal music on its soundtrack for seasons and weather. Sliding down ice strikes me as great fun.

What I think should also make somewhat of a return would be low visibility blizzards, (In Morrowind we had the blight causing a red cloud to blow through the ashlands). It should lower visibility to a couple of feet making anything beyond that a surprise if you don't know what to expect.

True but for the DS it is just a simple added effect here, palette swap there. games that don't use sprites it is a bit more complicated to make it realistic. I wholeheartedly agree with the idea, it just isn't as simple to implement as on a DS game. I would love to see a cavern like the one you mentioned, as well as a frozen lake that you can crash through.

Yeah, I suppose it would be more difficult. But it would be great to make you feel like the land goes through it's own changes, rather than have the whole map look the same year round.

Cuz its cold, I think most people would have their fireplaces going - so I'd like to see some smoke coming out of most houses in Skyrim. And I hope they make it so that we can see smokes from far away ;)

well they made hardcoe mode in Fallout NV so i guess TOS V could have one to with limited open air exposer and armor may slightly affect it so heavy iron makes it slightly higher than light fur armor and over time of to much exposer you recieve a "frostbite" debuff which lowers some stats

I for one hope like heck the whole of Skyrim won't just be snow.
That said I do think they will have the above mentioned atmospheric thinks like log fire, lots of fur.
I love the beauty of the 'world' of Tamriel. Even Morrowwind with it's original graphics had so many beautiful places.
uhMatt on ign ES thread pages posted some pictures of scenes with a graphic 'mod' that were unbelievably clear and beautiful.
Also, when there wasn't an ashstorm blowing even Ald Ruhn had a magnificent night sky.
I will never forget the heart stopping moment of emerging from the sewers the first time I played Oblivion and faced the breathtaking Tamriel and the realism, for me was breath taking.
I want that again. Please.

Horse drawn sleighs!
I don't think it would be too hard to implement some kind of sliding (or sledding?!?) mechanism in the game, I mean look at every snowboarding game ever. Lose your balance, go ragdoll.

It can't be. They can't have mead without seasons and flowers. Nords like their mead, right? For fearsome winters, I'd like to see people covering their doors with fur and leather to block the cold.

More focus on the natural elements, and survival and exploration type skillsets. Enough of this dumbing down to 21 skills, we need a smarting up instead. Quite large post about it here:

I would like to see longhouses much like the ones built by the http://www.hurstwic.org/history/articles/daily_living/text/longhouse.htm. I would imagine each major city or town having a large hall with a fire in the middle where the community could come get warm, drink, and be merry.

A little off topic but this got me thinking, what if we had a spell to turn water into ice to walk on...? Anyways, yes, there should be a system that involves the player needing to stay warm. Should you get too cold, you lose stats like strength, and agility...and/or just plain kill you.

 Turf house!! Brings to mind Bilbo's house in LotR!!
Good point about the mead! Thank heavens, that's one worry off my mind. Now my only worry is wether I can play it at all because of the activation issues.
Ah, but that's another country....[and the wench is dead] :sleep2:

If the terrain is destructable, how about footprints, which could tie into tracking? How about being able to dig snow shelters, or digging into a snowbank for a recon, or a spiderhole for an ambush, or a pit trap?

I also want iIce-covered water, with some weak spots that you'd fall through. Make getting out nigh impossible via the slippery ice or even trying to find the hole again. Water should be COLD, so besides water breathing, you need a heat source. And a penalty once you're out due to being wet in freezing temps. Also, how about some cracking or ice-making booms (if you haven't heard either...it's freaky, yet cool), and some snow discoloration for slushy or weak spots.

An ice palace would be intersting as well :twirl:

If we consider that the seasons will change, different types of "polar bears" and wolves should be more aggressive - same with other creatures(except those who "hibernate"/die during the winter) - since it would be hard to find food.
Also it woulb be great with roads "dissappearing" altered by the amount of snow falling and so on.
