Question about Argonians

Post » Thu Jun 20, 2013 9:08 pm

Alright, I have a few questions, that may be perceived as a bit perverted, but, I assure you that they are, indeed NOT. I've been playing The Elder Scrolls games since Morrowind (Tried playing Arena, but my system wouldn't run it). In every game, I've noticed one thing that has never been explained ONCE, and I bet a few of y'all have wondered about it, or at least silently questioned it without much else thought.

ARGONIAN WOMEN HAVE briastS.

Why? They're amphibians for crying out loud. Frogs and other amphibians have no maternal instinct whatsoever. They mate, lay their eggs, and otherwise COMPLETELY forsake their young. This has been a point that has bugged the hell out of me for the entire series, but I never really thought to bring it up. Until now. The Khajiit, on the other hand, are perfectly justified in having briasts, as they are, of course mammals. So, my questions: 1) Do Argonians give birth to live young, or do they lay eggs? and 2) If they do birth live young, do they indeed briastfeed? Another question I have is, are Argonians endotherms (like mammals, being able to regulate their own body temperature), or exotherms (like snakes and lizards, having to rely on the heat from the sun or other external sources of heat to maintain an active metabolism)? So, The Elder Scrolls games are great, but, they leave a few questions. Bethesda, your response?

Just so you all know, I DO in fact realize that they are just video game characters. However, I, myself, like to know all the specifics of the characters I play. And something like this is something that I'd like to know. If for nothing else, just to make the games seem that much more realistic and well thought out.

Argonians are reptiles, but they aren't cold blooded. We theorize that they regulate body temperature much in the same way sharks do.

In terms of giving birth, they are ovoviviparous; they produce eggs which hatch in the female's body without obtaining nourishment from it (so sayeth Pete Hines on the matter). The briasts are just bumps and serve no purpose.

Well, I'm glad some people have commented! :) I was afraid that noone would get into the discussion. Is Pete Hines a member of the Elder Scrolls team?

Argonians appear to be closer to "dinosaurs" than to reptiles and amphibians in at least one respect: slightly elevated but poorly regulated body temperature. Perhaps "cool blooded" might be a usable term.

A few reptiles guard their nests (some Cobra species, for example), although they don't nurture the young.

The bodies in MW were made using most of the same elements as the "man" and "mer" bodies, but placed on a modified skeleton, and with different textures applied. The briasts are part of that carry-over element, since they're part of the torso used for all sentient NPCs and playable characters (except for a few sentient "creatures" like Mudcrab Merchant, etc.).

It's not exactly the same you know, some elements in TES might be inspired by real life elements but is in fact significantly different. for examples, TES has sun, stars and moon yet it's not the same as ours the sun and stars are actually a hole to the realm of aetherius and the moons are said to be the body of lorkhan the trickster deity.

In argonian case, they indeed are at least modeled after lizard but they are not entirely lizards there are various accounts of their origins, some said that they were lizards that changed after drinking from a sentient tree called the hists, some said the evolved from it, besides if I remember correctly there are various types of argonian, like the one in TES : Arena the types of argonian there resembles humans more than lizards.
