Travelling to Vvardenfell

Post » Tue Apr 13, 2010 5:07 pm

Say a battallion from the imperial legion were to be transferred from cyrodiil to vvardenfell, how long would it take them to cross the inner sea and where would a large company ship from? Say if they travelled across land into morrowind which port town would they use? Thanks.

Well, closest thing I can think of varies depending on several factors: how fast they are traveling daily, where they depart from, where they land, and where they are being stationed. I'd imagine that crossing the inner sea wouldn't take too long, it looks to be around roughly 40-30 miles wide in some areas, seeing as it's been reckoned that from Mournhold to Dagoth Ur is 250 miles. Also, depending on where they depart and land, there are several possibilities. If they were being sent to Fort Darius in Gnisis, they'd probably leave from a northern city like Blacklight. Possibly they'd have to go through Ebonheart since that is the main Imperial location in Vvardenfell, probably leaving from a more central location like Balfalls (a town on older maps and I believe mentioned in 2920, but there's no telling if it's still there) or Old Ebonheart (again, no telling if that location still exists within current lore).

Seeing as I'm currently killing time before going to work, I don't really have the time to work out the math... other people would most likely be able to provide more details concerning ship speed and troop movement.

EDIT: withing? well, at least that part is fixed.

Muthsera,

I would state that, while we may be able to determine the amount of time it takes to reach Vvardenfell from Cyrodiil, we have insufficient data to calculate the travel time within the island's interior, despite having sufficient data only a few years ago.

Why?

Because we have yet to determine whether Vvardenfell remains as it was prior to the Oblivion Crisis and the loss of Vivec's divinity.

Lie Rock could have torn the island asunder.

Please see http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=639309&hl= for further information and a statement by MK concerning the status of Vivec City.

Yours in the Scrolls,

Looking at a map of Tamriel, i'd say the Legion would sail from Leyawiin and around Black Marsh to get to Morrowind (i'm ignoring Leyawiin's design in Oblivion and the fact that it cuts off the freakin' river, in case you haven't noticed). Another option would be sailing from Anvil and going around Hammerfell, High Rock, and Skyrim, but that would take a great deal longer and I don't see why they'd take that route when the other one is much shorter.

As far as which port they would use in Morrowind, i'm not sure. If you're talking about Vvardenfell, I doubt they'd use the smaller ports like Seyda Neen and Gnaar Mok, and the Telvanni ports would probably be too hostile towards the Legion. That means the most likely option would be Ebonhart: Imperial-owned and large enough to hold a ship carrying a battalion of troops. If you're talking about the mainland, i'm guessing either Tear or Blacklight by looking at the map; Necrom is considered a holy city to the Dunmer and I doubt the Legion would land a ship there.

Those are my best guesses.

Thanks guys, I was thinking before the oblivion crisis. Is belfall a large town or city? Has it been influenced by the imperials or is it purely Dunmeri in design?

Actually, I was wrong, Balfalls (Stonefalls) is never mentioned in 2920. A search at TIL only brought up a "letter home" from Oblivion, unless it's one I've never happened across, I think it was found in the mines from the Mehrunes Razor DLC. So I guess the size of the town/city is a toss up. All I really know is that is essentially across the River Tear a ways from Old Ebonheart.

EDIT: for some reason I was getting it confused with a town named Bodrum. Go figure.

Bal Fell ('city of stone')
Bal Fell is the "City of Stone," an ancient First Era ruin in the southeastern islands and promontories of Azura's Coast. The site has a nasty reputation, and several Telvanni wizards currently have competing camps of hirelings and adventurers exploring and looting there. Legend says that Bal Fell was built on the site of an ancient Daedric worship center.

It was, in fact, a Daedric ruin east of Vivec city.

Ok then another question. Where would the neravarine have come from? Which prison? And what port would he have cast off from to get to seyda neen?

I believe our hero was taken from the Imperial City Prison. Almost 100% sure Azura specificly says you are "Taken from the Imperial City Prison, first by carrige, and now by boat..."

I was referring to the town on the mainland south of Vivec and Ebonheart. Don't worry Albides, I made sure to double check to make sure I wasn't confusing the two.

EDIT: while Stonefalls does originally appear on the Arena map, the http://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/dl9apprenticeletter.shtml in Oblivion says that it's apparently still there and I doubt that they'd be sending correspondence via Daedric Ruins.

EDIT 2: oh, and it was from the Mehrunes Razor DLC.

Your're right. I checked the Imperial Library and this is a quote from Morrowind's intro:

[post="http://www.imperial-library.info/tsomw/mw_1.shtml"]"They have taken you from the Imperial City's prison,
first by carriage and now by boat,
to the east to Morrowind.
Fear not, for I am watchful,
you have been chosen."[/post]

I would think Old Ebonheart would be the most likely port he would be shipped from. There doesn't seem to be too many other ports around unless, like previously stated, they shipped him from Black Light or someplace there, but then it wouldn't make too much sense I don't think.
