Playable Races, Choices and You

Hey now, not all Nords are like that. That's just his opinion too; as far as I'm concerned, I like the Dunmer the most but generally when I used to think of elves when I was younger, I usually thought the same thing that Tonedog wrote. But ever since TES, my view of elves in general has changed.

Altmer torture and kill people for different beliefs and almost decimated the Empire.

Bosmer eat other bosmer.

Dunmer live in one of the most inhospitable provinces and basically said FU to the Empire without starting a war.

He seems relatively tough for an elf... he still has those pointy fine features. Doesn't mean I can't imagine him slaying an orc or redguard or nord barbarian type but I imagine him being all "away with you nasty brute" while he does it, like he'd make it wussy.

You can be dominant and deadly and sinister and evil and still kind of sissy. Especially if you have superior technology and power as a race (or magic). Let me just put it out there now that to me magic is inherently sissy, no matter the race. The mages are the sissies of whatever race they're members of. I imagine they caught hell from warriors growing up, probably had their breaches tore up betwix their buttocks before running crying back to their room to read about spells and fantasise about revenge against their superiors.

Brutish manly men have been tortured and executed by sissies for having different beliefs for centuries in real life. Think of all the brutish forest pagan barbarians that would have been brutally tortured to death by some nancy priest or milk drinking emporor through history. Then you can also reference slavery in the americas where big brawny Raw Lewis types were whipped to death by little dainty cackling leo dicaprio types. Hell you could even look in american prisons today to see the manliest baddest men around in chains being reprimanded by some chubby moustachio'd wussy.

I go back to cats and dogs, dogs are just rough and tumble knock about types and cats are uppity wussies. Now that doesn't mean a leopard isn't gonna whip a golden retreivers ass, but still I'd argue the leopard's nature is that of an uppity fancy wussy pants while the golden retreiver is a rough and tumble, turd-rolling, butt sniffing knock about. It's about their personality and approach to life rather than absolute might.

Now I realise redguard's actually do have a somewhat uppity wussy culture attached to them, I don't like that and my redguards I always imagine are from a tribal culture that are relatives of the "alik'r", not actual alik'r.

For me, I couldnt ever play a Bosmer or a Khajit. Bosmer because I hate playing short races.. and they're green pact thing is scary as hell. Khajit because I have no desire to play as a humanoid cat...

As for my favorite race... well even though I fell in love with TES when playing Morrowind, my heart will always tell me to play a Nord. I like being tall, I like their culture and their climate.

Bosmer, Redguards, and Orcs are at the bottom of my list.

Bretons are at the top. For someone who prefers a partially and sometimes fully Magic-focused char, Bretons are a marvelous race.

They're also useful for roleplay, since they seem to be less culturally unified than the Altmer, and therefore more likely to end up with the unusual opinions that my RP gives them.

I'm not very keen on being a fish/cat.

No interest - Argonian

Well so far while playing Elder Scrolls games I have chosen a different race each time, so it is hard to say what I prefer but I voted Nord anyway, because I will likely end up with two of them.

For Skyrim I have an Imperial (Xbox 360), Nord (Xbox 360), Orc (Xbox 360), Khajiit (PS3), and I had a Red Guard on the PC that I lost when the PC died. When starting a new character last night on the PC I decided there was no way I could play an Argonian and went for another Red Guard, only female instead of the male I lost, her adventures were cut short by hardware issues though.

My one Xbox 360 character for Oblivion was a Breton.

My favorite races to play as are the Altmer and Nords because they are progenitor races with interesting lore. I am also fond of Redguards for the same reasons, though I do not play them as often.

However, despite my fondness for the Dunmer and Khajiit, I may never get around to making either of those because certain unsavory individuals here and elsewhere who just so happen to be overzealous fans of these races left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Therefore, every time I scroll up and down the race menu and encounter either of these, I am reminded of those prats.

As for the rest:

  • Bosmer and Orsimer are rehashed fantasy tropes.
  • I see Bretons and Cyrods as boring because of their hybridized cultures. Plus, my brain associates "Breton" with "power gamer".
  • Argonians are just too damn alien. Though I understand that this weirdness is a part of their charm.

Loved the Dunmer in Morrowind. But playing Skyrim I usually play as a Nord or Altmer. Due to their connections with the different aspects of Akatosh. Ancient Nords worshiped Alduin, Altmer worship Auriel.

I usually play as whatever race would be native to the province the game is set in though I'd rank Orcs, Nords and Redguards as my preferred races due to my fondness for strong warrior-like cultures. It's also the same reason why Dunmer are my favorite Mer race coupled with their skills in magic as well. I don't really play Khajiits, Bosmers or Imperials because they don't really fit my play-style and quite frankly I find their lore to be really mundane with the exception of the Bosmeri Wild Hunt.

Too be honest though I'm kind of sick of Nords now especially after playing them so much in Skyrim. I think I might go with an Orc or Redguard as my main for the next TES, the latter being more likely since I dual wield and use single-handed weapons most of the time.
