Wizard build

Post » Sun Jun 23, 2013 9:20 pm

Ok so, i have been playing the game for more than a year now and never bothered playing a mage character. i usually dont go around making a lot of characters and if i do then i just stick to the theif/assassin type or the warrior type and i rarely use magic. but i feel like i should try a mage character for once, especially since the DLCs have added a few more spells and abilities. the thing is im not very experienced on how to make a character like that. i feel like destruction is a bit weak and costs a lot of magicka and does little damage to enemies. sometimes i have to use a weapon to balance things out and not get my ass kicked. any tips that you guys can give me so i dont get my ass kicked when trying this new build?

im not sure what the race will be, its either a dunmer (from House Telvanni), a breton or an altmer. ill probably join the college as well. im open to any other suggestions.

Maybe try something closer to home? Try a Battlemage or Spellsword.

Destruction is useful, but without a mod you'll want to blend in conjuration and illusion. At higher levels you could have a companion, two dremora lords, and one of their own fighting on your side - use alchemy to create powerful potions of 'restore magicka' and 'fortify destruction' - you'll end up with a killing field that tilts in your favor even on legendary difficulty.

Being a Breton and having the atronach stone is a good combination. It will make fighting other mages easier and you will be able to absorb their magic. Conjuration is a must. As a wizard you should master all schools of magic.

My main is a wizard and its quite entertaining.

I would not rely on destruction to take care of all your enemies, like CerebralDreams said mixing in Conjuration and Illusion will make your life easier. Conjuration will provide you with a buffer so that you can plan out your attacks. Unfortunately the spells in this game leave something to be desired considering how much freedom was allowed in the last two games. As long as you don't fall into relying solely on one school of magic you will be fine in my opnion. Currently I am playing a breton conjurer whose main focus is conjuration but he uses destruction magic (frost spells) and some alteration and illusion spells to round out his arsenal.

One thing you should remember with a mage is that you do not under any cicumstances want to rush into battle headfirst. take the time to plan out your attack and use caution. I really miss the enchanting and spell making of the last two games because you could really customize your spellbook and if you were playing a strict RP you could really help out your mage using enchanted rings and amulets to increase your firepower and protection(something I think that morrowind did very well by the way). I am really hoping that with the next installment that they bring back the spellmaking and change the enchanting a little to make it more practical. but that is for another discussion.

Breton by the way is a good choice especially against other mages, but there are other options as well. The High Elves have a larger pool of magicka but they have a weakness to elemental magics, and the dunmer are good with destruction

My mage character didnt use barely any destruction until I was able to drop its cost to 0%. Destro spells cost a ton of magicka, and they dont deal a lot of damage so you have to chain cast a lot. So until you can level enchanting and reduce your costs, I would recommend using a follower, summoning minions, and buffing them with illusion spells. I would also level alteration for flesh armor spells, paralyze, and other utility spells that really help.
