I just got the Logitech G430's a few weeks ago for $85. It is wired with simulated 7.1 surround sound and works just fine for FPS gaming and lets me hear directions like players bullets and footsteps really well. Has a built in retractable microphone for chatting which works fine.

My recommendations on getting a headset is to go with at least 5.1 surround sound, I've heard that simulated sound is better for gaming and immersive 3D audio because the physical surround sound headsets just play in different parts of your ear. Simulated is cheaper anyway.

Also, if you can get a extended warranty on the headset, doesn't matter if you got a good brand because all these things are flimsy and it takes a tiny wire to get stretched and all of a sudden one ear goes dead. This is like my 4th or 5th headset I've gone through in 2-3 years, I finally got myself a warranty lol.

Razer Carcharias.

I′m talking about the old one, I don′t know the specs of the new. I′ve ben using it for 2 years and I still have to encoutner a single issue with it.

And do NOT get anything that uses 7.1 surround. There is only 1 headset that I know of (razer tiamat) that uses real 7.1, the rest only emulate it and it is NOT 100% accurate. Always look for 5.1.

Stay away from all "gaming" headsets if you're looking for quality.

Till date nothing can touch a pair of stereo headphones made from a respectable audio company like Sennheiser, AudioTechnica, Beyerdynamic, etc. The kind of engineering that goes into their products makes them ideal for gaming, regardless of how they're often called studio or monitoring headphones - it just means they've precise and accurate, with a flat response. No, they're not expensive and can get as low as $30.

And please don't be tempted by the whole "surround" gimmick, any headphone can simulate surround sound. Unless you're looking for TRUE surround that literally uses multiple drivers (e.g. Roccat Kave, godawful sound quality but very accurate surround) it means nothing.

Few suggestions:
$30 - Audio Technica ATH-M20
$40 - Sennheiser HD419
$70 - Sennheiser HD429
$90 - Shure SRH440
$100 - Audio Technica AD-700
$120 - Sennheiser HD449
$130 - Sennheiser HD518
$160 - Audio Technica ATH-M50
$180 - Sennheiser HD558
$195 - Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro

I'm using HD558 myself, love them. Could list more expensive ones if you want, what's the upper bounds of your budget?
Mind you if you do keep going higher then the need for a semi-decent soundcard becomes more and more apparent, as onboard sound won't make the best of $250+ headphones.

This man speaks the truth.
I have a Koss UR40 which are quite cheap but are one the best headphones in that price range especially if you like some heavier music. And they work great in gaming you can easily locate enemies based on surround soud.
Don't buy any Razer Super Mega Giga something something. Just don't all headphones named "Gaming" are overpriced.

http://www.razerzone.com/surround

Its a software by Razer that add 7.1 virtual surround sound to stereo headset\headphone branded Razer or not. You can manually configure the virtual speakers and adjust them as u like, is only 11mb but the best part is that is free and in my opinion is worth giving it a try :D
