Save game limitations

I think I might be alone with this idea, but I thought I'd post it anyway. One thing that has always kind of had me wondering is the TES savegame system. The player can save their progress at any time, as often as they'd like. There's even the quicksave option that makes it even easier to save during any kind of circumstance. The problem with this is that there's really no difficulty or consequences, especially with being a thief or such. You can always quicksave right before stealing something so if you get caught, you just reload.

But what if it was different. What if the only saves that would happen would be autosaves. These could happen every time you enter a new cell or as they have been so far? This way, there'd be lots of saves happening all the time but you couldn't actually control them however you want. Therefore when you're sentenced to jail you'll actually consider going there because that last save was too far away. This would make gameplay more engaging and difficult, giving your character an actual past instead of a perfect record of omnipotency. It would make you more careful in dungeons because you really wouldn't want to die (giving use to all those potions and scrolls as you fight to survive).

Skyrim eventually became too easy for me so I had a go at the "dead is dead" playstyle. I found that it's actually pretty easy not to die if you really try not to (despite having many difficulty increasing mods). And it makes many situations so rewarding. It also makes your character a lot more interesting when you can't choose everything to go as planned every single time (thieving for example).

Anyway I understand that this is probably not the common opinion and even if it was, I can't really see them changing it. Still, I'm curious what others have to say!
