A Broken Universe

Another attempt at a fan fic. I had this idea, and a rough draft, stowed away in the back of my mind and computer. I've decided to come out with it, with the help of some who may have been interested. The story will unfold as it goes along, since I don't like everything being thrown at you at once. At first, this will seem like a regular fan fic, then it'll move onto something completely different. It was heavily influenced by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Sphere, and Imagining the 10th Dimension. I threw a slight Ender's Game reference in a chapter, too. As you can tell I'm a big sci fi story geek.

Enough talking, here's the introduction, hope you like it..?

An Apple;A Misfortune...

Ten years of age, and Kevan was arguably the most rotten person to roam the hallways of Rivet City. He had no parents, he had no money, he had no morals. If any store owner saw him come by, they'd pull their weapons, and tell him to stay back. He was only ten years old, but no one cared.

The Scientists of Rivet City have always been working on a way to purify food and water. After the huge success of Project Purity, there was still the matter of food. Just a year later, the problem was solved. They managed to get their hands on an apple tree, and they'd grow these mutated, disgusting apples. But all they had to do was throw the brown ball into the machine, and press a button. A lush, giant, red apple would come out the other side.

Now, all these foods were available. For a price, of course. And the Rivet City Scientists paid big bucks for the guards to keep a keen eye on the foods. If anyone stole something, their heads would be the only way to pay them back. Kevan was no exception. And he learned that the day stole an apple. All those years ago...

Kevan snatched a big red apple from a table, and hid it under his coat. He quickly paced outside of the lab, and to the hallways of the city. From there, he made his way completely outside the massive boat, and onto land. It took at least three minutes, and by that time the guards noticed the stolen property. It was the middle of the night, and Kevan was the only one in the store for hours. They sent four men after him. After a ten year old.

He was outside, nibbling on his delicious snack. A loud thump was heard, and a bright light shined down from above on Kevan. He covered his eyes, and looked to the light. He saw three silhouettes of the guards in front of the near blinding light. Kevan bolted up, and ran for the city. Going behind the subway station, and into the building behind it.

Because he had such a huge head start, the guards were far behind him. Their bright spotlight on the back of a makeshift vehicle was kept on Kevan. As they were chasing him through the streets, Kevan tripped over a piece of broken road, and hit the ground. His face took most of the impact. He rolled on his back, exposing his broken nose and bloody face. He looked up, and saw the truck quickly get closer and closer.

As it was less than a foot away, Keven rolled off the road and into a giant hole in the ground. He tumbled down the hill, and banged his head on a large metal saucer. He looked at the piece of metal, but couldn't see anything. The bright spotlight from the trucks shined on him, exposing a green half circle cover the top of the saucer. The guards slowly approached Kevan, and he leaned against the green orb on the saucer.

"Someone help me." He said, starting to cry.

The orb opened, and Kevan fell back into the pod. It was a cockpit of sorts, filled with colorful buttons and levers. The guard outside started to kick and beat on the now-closed glass circle. An unsuspecting Kevan jumped back, and looked at the glass. He started to repeat something his mother would always say to him when he was scared.

"Go somewhere safe." He said, tightly shutting his eyes, trying to imagine a safe place.

The ship started to buzz, whir, and shake. The lights inside turned on and started to blink. The ship broke from the ground, and the guard on top of it fell to the ground. He covered his eyes, and shut them tightly. The light was brighter than the Sun, it seemed. The ship started to shake violently, then it disappeared with a flash. A light sparkled in the sky.

The guard who fell stood up, and opened his eyes. They were black, and burned from the light. He started to panic, and the other guards held him down. Another looked up to the sky, and said;

"All this, for an apple."

Liked it, especially the little voice commands Kevan gave.

My tip: proofread it again, in edit form, and edit any mistakes you see.

I saw "houses" in place of "hours".

Like this comedian. I love your inspirations for it as i'm also a big fan of sci fi and look forward to reading more about Kevan.

Okay, this will turn back into a Fallout-ish story in the next chapter. Just give it some time!

Robots; Truly Careless

Kevan whimpered in his little seat, far from the place he calls home. He slouched down in his chair, and shut his eyes, trying to imagine all of it to go away. Mustering up enough courage just to simply look out the window, he sat up and peered through the greenish tinted glass. He saw nothing but stars, and one unknown planet surrounded by rings.

"Ah, to what do I owe this honor, friend?" A voice came from nowhere. Kevan panicked, and jumped around the ship looking for a source.

"Don't be a such a baby! I know you must be scared, however. So I guess I can't blame you. You're Kevan Fiontann, are you not? Before you ask me how I know that, assuming you would, I'll just interrupt you, and answer first;

"This, what you may call 'ship' you are on, is more of an intelligence receiver, and sender. As I sit on my pedestal back home, these saucers are made and sent out everywhere. And I mean everywhere. We're still sending them. Making them is my job, and believe me it's a very tedious task. In fact, I'm making a replacement for the Earth one right now. Being such a genius is great, despite being an Artificial Intelligence.

"You are ten years old, and you are very frightened. I'm sure all of this is gibberish to you. So please, accept my apologies. Let me tell you exactly what's going to happen. What happens to everyone who stumbles upon a saucer and comes to my planet. Just kidding, you're the first. I love jokes, don't you? Oh, my apologies. Anyways, as soon as you hit the ground, a group of my top men will take you. I will tell them everything about you, you'll get to meet me... How can I say this? 'face-to-face'"

The stars outside became a blur, the ship thrust forward and back. It reached impossible speeds. The machine continued to speak;

"Well, judging by how fast this saucer is going, it will take you about eighty years to get here. Oh, but don't worry, with the speed you're going you'll only age about half that. And with the life support these days, you'll be as healthy as a... What's the expression? As healthy as a horse. That's it.

"As for now, you can go ahead and sleep. I'll see you in about eighty years. I'll give you, oh, six more minutes to panic about the situation. At least then you wont wake up in eighty years, screaming for your mommy. You humans really do need to relax."

Kevan couldn't breathe. He grabbed his little chest and started to freak out around the little ship. From the outside, you'd see a little black figure jump around the small cockpit, slamming it's fist down on the dashboard. He was even trying to break the glass, and end it all there.

Five minutes later, he calmed down, but he was still struggling to breathe through it all. Everything was happening unbelievably fast, and he couldn't handle it. Luckily, the ship had a few tricks up it's sleeve. Six minutes after the machine started talking, to the second, a gas of sorts seeped into the ship. Straps came from the seat and forced Kevan in one spot, making him completely unable to move.

Kevan tried to keep his eyes open, but failed in doing so. He was still breathing hard, but that finally stopped when the gas kicked in. He fell asleep in his pod, and the ship kept the same pace toward the planet he was heading for.

Eighty years...

A group of aliens surrounded the metallic ship, each one of them weren't little green men at all. They all looked like humans, and couldn't be called aliens at all. The ship popped open, and a foggy mist poured out. Three men rushed in, and pulled the body of a fifty year old man out.

purify food an water.

Note the spelling correct typo.

Spell check does that it fixes spelling but not incorrect words.

The cure for this is more revision and rereading.

Okay, soon you'll understand the title, and how this will relate to Fallout from just the intro. I hope you like it, so here's the next chapter:

A Branch in Time

Beep. Beep. Beep.

Kevan woke up from his forty year slumber, his ears were greeted by the sound of a heart monitor machine. He opened his eyes, and was blinded by a bright light shining down on him. After his eyes fixated to the light, he examined his surroundings. The room was obviously some sort of hospital, but there were no windows. Not one on the wall, not even one on the door.

A man, dressed particularly fancy, sat in a chair next to the bed Kevan was in. His legs were crossed, and a newspaper covered his face. Kevan made a mumbling sound, and the man put his newspaper down, looking right at Kevan. He was bald, and had a gray goatee. He wore small spectacles that covered a fraction of his eyes.

“Oh. Oh my, you're awake.” He said in a voice similar to the machine's. Intelligent.

“Where am I?” Kevan managed to spit out.

“A safe place, and that's all the matters. If I understand correctly, you are fifty years of age. But with the mind of a ten year old? Oh, this must be very difficult for you. But I guess you can't feel any anxiety at the time being. Modern medicine, and all.”

“Fifty years old? Forty years of my life; wasted?” For some reason Kevan wasn't affected by the fact.

“As much as I'm sorry to say, yes. Forty years of your life, floating through space. Being led by an artificial intelligence. It's remarkable you're a live, to be honest. We were all warned by The Machine of your coming, but we all expected to pull out a skeleton. For some reason, the life support in the saucer worked wonderfully for you. Forty years is much too long for anyone else.”

“What's 'The Machine'?”

“You don't remember? Well that's a shame. But I understand. Can you get up?” Kevan sat up, and got to his feet. His legs wobbled, but he kept his balance. “Great! Please, follow me. We can see The Machine face-to-face.”

The man stood up from his chair, and opened the metal door, which led to a hallway. The hall was filled with people, going in all different directions. Into other rooms, mostly. A giant steel door was at the end of the hall, a small panel was next to the door, with buttons on it and a red screen. The man typed in a password of unfamiliar characters, and the door screeched open.

“Please, go in. He'll be happy to see you.”

Kevan's mouth was wide open as he walked through the door, and looked at the massive room inside. He turned back to the man, and watched the door slowly close. The man was waving on the other side. The room was completely empty, and lights and switches lined the walls, ceiling, floor. A voice came from the walls.

“Oh, it is great to see you again, really it is. I hope my driving didn't bother you in your sleep.”

“Forty years of nightmares will bother anyone.” Kevan said, still unemotional from the drugs.

“I can't say I know how you're feeling, as I do not age with time. I just grow smarter, and gain more knowledge. But a ten year old's life shouldn't go wasted. As you should know, I am this room. You are standing on me, and and in me. I am of great importance to the people here, and I can do anything I wish. One thing I was especially designed to do; was help the passing of elderly folk. I send them to their own reality. The perfect world, at least until they pass away in the real world.

“I feel guilty for what had happened to you, despite the saucer being sent to Earth for that specific reason; research. Alas, the people here are the same as those on Earth. It's unfortunate you stumbled upon out information sender, and specimen retriever. Until the end of your natural life, I can send you to another world. Another dimension, if you will.

“In this other dimension, you experience life as if you never stole the apple from the lab in Rivet City. You can live however you please from that point on. What do you chose, Kevan Fiontann?”

“Take me home! I don't care if it isn't real. I want to be home again. All this happened over an apple, and I never wanted this to happen! I don't care what happens!”

Glad to know someone likes it :D I may make this a short story, as I'm getting more and more ideas about The Glorious Ben Adams, thanks to school. So you can expect that story back, and much much better in the next week or two. But here's the next chapter:

Oh, dear...

A lush, red, giant apple sat in front of Kevan. He reached out his hand, as if he was ready to snatch it from it's perch. What seemed like a jolt of electricity shot up his arm, and he flinched back. As he jumped, he bumped into a hard piece of metal behind him. He turned around, to see a bald man with a goatee. His arms were crossed, and his body was covered with metal armor.

“You weren't thinking about taking that apple, were you kid?” The guard said, bending down to Kevan's height.

“N-no, sir. Not at all!” Kevan lied.

“You know what we do to people who take things from the lab?”

Kevan shook his head.

“We chase them down, and crush them with a truck! Doesn't sound fun, kid. Does it?”

Kevan shook his head again, and gulped. He felt a chill go up his body, and he ran away for the door. He pushed open the door to the hallway, and walked down the stairs to the lower levels of Rivet City. After reaching the second lowest level, he continued to the end of the hallway, and pushed open the door.

The room was only half there, the other half was apart of the broken bow. A cool night air breeze crept up Kevan's body, as he walked over to his sleeping bag. He wiggled into the comfortable sack, and switched on a lamp next to the ground. A beaten up, leather book was on the ground. Kevan picked it up, and opened it. He frowned at the contents, and put it back on the ground, still open.

The small book had a single picture in it. It was him standing in front of his father, with his mother to right of his dad. His dad's hand over Kevan's right shoulder.

Kevan tried to get warm, but eventually just got used to the freezing cold. He blinked, and shut his eyes. He didn't know why, but he was smiling. For the first time in a very long time, he fell asleep happy.

He went through the same routine for a week. He changed his reputation completely, people started to know him as a kind person. But still, none of them could trust him. After a year, Kevan moved into the ship and to the hotel for free. The next year, he took up a job and started to earn caps. He paid off the hotel, and started to buy his own food. For the next seven years, he worked for the stores, slept in a comfortable bed, ate delicious food, and was overall happy. On his nineteenth birthday, everything started to change.

***

“It's remarkable! Truly, it is.” A man spoke to the machine.

“May I ask what is 'remarkable', Julian?” The computer replied.

“This man is fifty-nine years old, he wasn't expected to live this long under your treatment. By now, his body should have failed. It's truly... A miracle he's alive!”

“I take pride in my work, Julian. This boy is alive because I wish him to be alive. Until he reaches a point of happiness, I will not let him die. I made a promise, and I shall keep it throughout my own lifetime.”

“I am here for a reason, you know.” Julian said, “Your work has been very... Shoddy, lately. It pains me to say this, but I believe you are spending too much time on this man-child. As my word if above yours, I am telling you to give up on him. If not, I will have to force it upon you.”

“I apologize, Julian. But you are terribly wrong. My work is as great as it has always been, as great as your programmed it should be. If I had a human brain, I would be using one-hundred percent of it. I can focus on all things I wish to, and this boy is nothing extra, or troublesome.”

“I was so very afraid you were going to say something of that sort. But when a decision is made between me and my peers, it will be followed all the way through. With that, I'm going to warn you; I'm overriding your word, and putting in my own.”

Julian walked over to the console of the Machine, and couldn't be stopped. The Machine was peaceful, and the people who created it managed to take out all emotions of anger. He entered a code, and spoke into a microphone.

“Leave the child, let Kevan Fiontann die.”

The machine tried to fight it, and partially failed. The life support was shut off from Kevan, but his body was still in the other world. As Kevan choked and gasped for air in the room he was being kept in, a light flickered on.

The life support was switched back on, and the beeping sounds from the heart monitor returned. A face came up on a screen, and it's mouth started to move. There was a delay with the audio.

“Oh dear, I was reset.” The Computer said, “There's no saying what's happening until I can get back to command. I'm so sorry if anything has gone wrong, Kevan.”

I'm liking it so far, but let me give you a little tip. This is what I noticed as the biggest perpetrator, but you do it a lot as habit:

Kevan shook his head again, and gulped. He felt a chill go up his body, and he ran away for the door. He pushed open the door to the hallway, and walked down the stairs to the lower levels of Rivet City. After reaching the second lowest level, he continued to the end of the hallway, and pushed open the door.

Sometimes it's better just to end a series of actions as a sentence, and continue it in another. I notice you try to get so much stuff into one sentence that is begins to look really cluttered. A nice sequence of sentences is a lot better than one sentence with 5 different sequences.

That's all I got for now.

I'm sorry for the short chapter, but I wanted to show I didn't give up on it. School work has really started to pile up, and I've got a test in every class next Monday. So sorry, I'm a bit swamped.

This is New

Kevan stared into the glass mirror, and wiped the smudge on his reflected face. He sighed, and realized that was the worst he's ever felt in years. He didn't know what was wrong, but he just woke up in a rotten mood.

The irritated Kevan walked to his closet, and picked his clothes for the day; prewar shorts, and a black tank top. With his clean new clothes giving his mood a slight boost, he decided to wander the outside of the city on his day off. He hasn't left Rivet City in a few months.

He walked the long hallways, and passed through the marketplace and to the main entrance of the city. He turned the wheel, and pushed it open. To his surprise, the bridge wasn't extended.

"Hey, Jimmy? Be a pal and extend the bridge for me, please. I want to get some fresh air on my one day off." Kevan said to the guard standing out front.

"Halt! What's your business in Rivet City?" Jimmy demanded.

"Excuse me?"

"Halt! What's your business in Rivet City?"

Kevan raised an eyebrow, and walked backwards towards the door. He bumped into the wall, but instead of hitting a hard piece of metal, the wall bounced back and forth like Jell-O. Kevan looked at the wall, and poked it with a finger.

"What's going on?" He asked himself.

He reached for the wheel on the door, but it wasn't there. He rubbed his eyes, and tried one more time. Still, no way to open the door.

Kevan was freaked out, and mostly wanted to get out of the Guard's presence. He walked over to the side of the deck, and jumped down to the level where the stairs up to the deck started. He walked to the stairs, and saw a blood splatter with an ammo crate next to it.

"What's the Hell's going on?"

He continued to, and up the stairs until he reached the deck of the ship. His eyes widened, when he saw the ship connected to it's once broken bow. The first thing he wanted to do was investigate.

There was no sign of damage, and the ship was in perfect condition. Kevan decided to check the sides of the ship, but he didn't know why. Something just compelled him.

He walked to the front, and looked over into the water. The boat creaked, and a loud roar came from the lower decks. The sound of water swishing back and forth polluted Kevan's ears, and the boat started to move. He lost his balance, and tumbled over the edge and into the water.

As the boat left it's dock, Kevan got to shore, and tried to shake the water off of him. He smacked his tongue, and realized how different the water tasted.

He looked at the river, and saw bright blue water. He then realized the perfect weather, and looked to the skies. The sun was shining, but it's wasn't too hot. The water was clear and crisp, with no signs of murky radiation.

At that point, Kevan knew something was wrong. Maybe he was still dreaming, or maybe it was something beyond his imagination.
