Crashes when I try to change video options

Post » Wed Jul 03, 2013 3:03 am

I have the GOTY version, and no other mods installed. The game plays just fine otherwise, no lag or anything. I'd really like to up the settings though...

Is it possible to change video settings from morrowind.ini? If so, I'd love to know how.

Did you install the game in Program Files? or Program Files (X86)? If so, you will have to disable the UAC. Or, you can just move the Morrowind game. In this case, it's easy, just move the whole game directory to another folder you created, like C:\Games\ , then make a shortcut to the exe in the new location.

Anyway, once you do that, then you can make changes to the game's video settings. It's the UAC that is preventing this, and will prevent you from manually editing the ini files too.

Also, just to note, turn off the Steam Overlay (Community) for this game also.

Thanks for the reply! I actually have the Steam version, so it's in SteamApps folder that's in Program Files. Also, I have XP.

So, what can I do in this situation? Should I reinstall steam straight on C:\?

There are ways to move your Steam Folder en-mass. See the Steam Support pages (search for Moving Steam Directory or Library)

Or, you can, like I said, drag the entire Morrowind directory out of Steam, or you can go into the Properties of the Morrowind Folder and the Saves folder and remove them from the UAC protection.

But, yes, in the long run, if you like older games, having Steam in someplace you make like C:\Games\Steam is much better as the older games will not have these issues.

Well, I tried reinstalling steam (along with Morrowind) on C, but that didn't resolve the issue. Dragging the Morrowind directory out of steam and launching it creates "Application Load Error". I never did find anything about UAC in folder options, but a google search revealed that UAC is only available on newer Windows versions (I have XP). Any other ideas?
