Maximum number of variables?

Anyone know what is the maximum number of variables that can be defined in a single script? Does it change if it is a quest or a magic script? And my last one: I saw it mentioned somewhere that defining new global variables should rather not be done (something about them always being floats), and rather use variables defined in a quest script. Is there a chance for the script not to work if I use a self made global variable when it is defined and used in the script as a short one?
