Skills reduced when enchanted items are equiped

Post » Tue Jul 09, 2013 10:02 am

Hello All,

I have a frustrating problem which has just begun to happen. Here is one recent exact example:

I create a Daedric sword, I then improve it as best I can ( It does 111 damage ). Then I equip a "Ring of peerless wielding". Now the swords damage is reduced ( It does 109 damage ). Then I un-equip the ring which further reduces the damage rating ( It does 76 damage )!

This same anomally has done permanent damage to several of my skills. For example my sneak skill is 100, I equip "Ring of major sneaking". My skills menu still shows a skill of 100 but I can no longer sneak nearly as well. My smithing has been damaged in this way as have several other skills which I have tried to enhance with enchanted apparel recently.

Has anyone got any info about what has gone wrong with my game? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It probably lowered because odds are you have a ring that increases One Handed damage.

Thanks for the reply. I don't get your answer though.

I can be wearing only a single unenchanted robe with no other items equiped. I create and then improve a one handed weapon which does 111 damage. I equip a ring which "used to" enhance one handed skill but instead the damage rating is reduced to 109 for the weapon. I then un-equip the ring and the weapon's rating is further reduced to 76 damage permanently. This is a bug. As i said, several of my items and skills have been damaged in this way.

First off, it sounds like you're taking augmented values as actual, and then declaring the unaugmented values to be bugged.

That said...

1. What are your 1h skill and Armsman rank? (For establishing your damage multipliers, to figure out the Smithing.)

2. What other One-Handed items or effects do you have?

3. Are you a vampire with Necromage? If so, what perks have you taken since getting the combo?

4. Do you have either the Amulet of Mara equipped, or the Blessing of Mara active?

Hypothesis: you have a Mara effect on you. When you put on the Ring of Peerless Wielding, the fortify restoration effect causes your ring to get +44% instead of +40%.

76 * 1.44 = 109.44, which is why you're seeing 109 when you equip the ring.

I do believe that 76 is your true damage.

Ok ...

1h skill 79 ... Armsman rank 4 ... Smithing 100

This is what I typically do: I go to create a weapon ... I take a bottle of Blacksmith's Elixor or Philter. I take An enchanted Blacksmith's apron which I enchanted to 24% enhanced smithing. I take both a ring and a neckless of peerless smithing.

I create the weapon then I equip the items above and drink the potion. I improve the weapon (latest was the Daedric Sword).

This is what I did last time too. The Sword was improved to 111 as I said. This seems low right from the git BTW.

I put the smithing enhancements away and equip my armor and jewelry for adventuring. The items that "should" enhance my 1h skill are (dragon scale boots +42% 1h) and (ring of peerless wielding +40% i think).

Now with those things equiped my sword's damage rating is 109. I take off the boots and the ring and now my sword's rating is 76.

This never used to happen. I have old Orcish armor that I created and improved when my smithing was 50 or so, and it offers better protection than any Daedric or Dragon armor I have made subseqently.

There seems to have been a point in my game at which time equiping enhancing items has had an almost opposite effect. I had carried around forever an Ebony mace which did something like 150 or so damage. I cant get anything like that any more.

Happened to me too. Made a dragonbone sword and equiped a ring of eminent weilding. The damage went down quite a bit. I couldn't find a way to fix it so I restarted my game. Turned it back on and my damage was now the appropriate scale for the ring.

Not sure if it will help you, Hope so. :icecream:

Hi Netch,

By "restarted" and "Turned it back on", do you mean that you just exited the game and re-launched it ? ... I have had this problem for about 10 days in real life now and have, of course done that many times. Or, are you saying that I should backup my saves and then remove and re-install Skyrim ? I certainly hope that what ever corruption I am experiencing is not embedded in all my recent saves .

Another weird thing happened the other day where I went to the Solitude court mage and trained Destruction 5 times for about 2500 gold. The gold is gone but the skill level of 46 never increased. This did not bother me too much since occasionally, a game's current image in memory gets corrupt and you just have to accept these minor annoyances.

Thanks

Are you using mods? If so, which ones? (So I can avoid them :) )

Hmm.... I mean shuting the console (or PC) off, then turrning the system back on. But in your case I guess it doesn't seem to matter...It fixed mine but this bug seems unpredictable.

As for your training problem, i've never seen it before. You've tried reloading your save?

I am sorry that I cannot help you more, I will do some tests on my game and get back to you soon. Hang in there Heretic!

I've done some tests, but I can't seem to rencounter the bug. Made a dragonbone sword with several fortify smithing augmentations (ring, gauntlets, etc). came out to a damage rating of 109. Then made a ring with fortify one-handed 25% The damage level increased by the appropriate amount, 24, ending up with 133. It's all correct. Removing the ring decreased it back to 109.

Sorry I can't help you, guess my game is working to well.

Ok. lemme sort this out then.

1h:

From skill: 1.395

From perk: 1.8 = x 2.511

From gear: 1.82 = x4.57002, so x4.57 is good enough.

Smithing:

From gear: 40+40+24 = x2.04

From potion: x1.4 = x2.856

Due to the smithing formula, this will yield a smithing modifier of +28 to weapons.

A Daedric sword should thus run off 42 base damage with this smithing (which for reference is Legendary 11, or rank 16.)

As such, 42*2.511 = 105.462: you should be showing 105 damage without gear.

I did find something else interesting. 24 * 2.511 * 1.82 = 109.68. 24 is the base damage of a Daedric Sword, smithed with "empty" smithing (that is, without gear or a potion: Legendary 1, or rank 6.)

Reducing 109 to 76 by removing either a 42% modifier, a 40% modifier, or both is impossible according to the math:

(24 * 2.511 * 1.4) ~ 84

(24 * 2.511 * 1.42) ~ 85

(24 * 2.511) = 60.264

----

If you're on the PC, try an experiment.

-Save the game.

-Do a player.advskill onehanded to get 1h up to 100; then take the fifth rank of Armsman.

-Grab a Blessing of Talos, then remove all enchanted gear. (It can almost be any blessing, but avoid Mara, Auriel or Boethiah to be sure.)

-Equip the sword. Is your damage:

72?

126?

Higher?

Firstly, thank you very much Sandslice and Netch for the effort.

I will try the experiment that you recommend. I will post again after I have tried it and some other things I'm thinking about.

Thanks again.
