Nameswords in Skyrim in your own language

Post » Wed Jul 10, 2013 5:08 pm

Hello forum-members!

Let's do a thread about names/words/places in Skyrim that you recognize from your own language.

It could be names that are similar to your own name, or words or part of words that resembles a word in your own language. I guess scandinavians or people from the nordic countries have an advantage here, but I bet there are other languages represented in the game too.

So fellow Scandinavians and earth-dwellers, let's hear it

My first thought was "Hevnoraak" - a

powerful dragon priest

Valthume

The first part of the name, "Hevn" means "revenge" in norwegian. Maybe it is the same word in danish and swedish. I don't know if the

Spoiler
dragon priest
has anything to do with revenge..

So...you specifically start with Hevnoraak...hmm.

He wants revenge against Valdar.

The first name that comes to my mind is Solitude. Solitude is the French word for "loneliness". I'm not sure that it's what you wanted to know though.

"Falk" in Falkreath means "Falcon" in Swedish. But the symbol of Falkreath is a deer and not a falcon. :bonk:

Brutal. Hevno means brutal in the Dragon tongue. My name, Hevnoraak, roughly translates to : Brutality. Valdar will learn the meaning of brutality once I'm... Oh, here I go rambling again.

Nahkriin's the one who fits the "revenge" deal. His name means vengeance.

Yes, yes, I know the OP said "IRL" languages... but I must ask: What blasphemy is this belief in "real life"? Drugs are bad. Okay? Lay off the skooma.

Alvor's name, as in the smith in Riverwood, means "serious"(and some other variations on that, depending on context) in Norwegian.

Riften means "the tear"(tear as a in a piece of clothing or something, not the crying type).

That are the ones I remember off the top of my head that are not mentioned.

I have a sneaking suspicion Kodlak's name comes from the Slavic 'vukodlak', meaning

Spoiler
werewolf.
Also, 'Mundus' comes from the Latin 'mundus' - what a stretch! - and means, simply, 'world' or 'universe'. And 'Nirn' means 'eternal' in Thai, which probably isn't intended but is kind of interesting when you consider all this talk about eating or dissolving reality revolves around a planet whose very name refuses to be made impermanent.

"Bos" in Bosmer is Dutch for woods or forest.

And the other name for this race is wood elf.

I doubt that this is a coincidence.

"Laten we naar het bos gaan voor de jacht."

"Let's go to the woods for the hunt."

And I believe that "alt" is German for old. Hence the Altmer, who are one of the oldest races.

Astrid is a typical old-fashioned Swedish name.

Arnbjorn - Bj?rn is bear in swedish (also my name). Arn...not sure, but Arne is also an old-fashioned name.

Fultheim - Fult might have something to do with blanket, and heim home (heim in Norwegian, hem in Swedish)

I'm sure there are many more.

The Nords are based on medieval Scandinavian culture, so it is not surprising to see many Scandinavian words in the names of the people and the areas.

I dunno.

In Spanish, Vivir means to live, so could that have something to do with the really long life of Vivec?

Also, Azul is spanish for blue, which explains her appearance in Tribunal (she's blue).

Andi dont think it worth to mention all the nordic names at least :P

Tiber, as in "Tiber Septim", is a river in Italy, and septim is close to septem which means "seven" or "seventh", or septum which means "to enclose" or "enclosed place" in Latin.

Narri means "jester" in Finnish. That's about it.

Oh and Mirri means the p-word word you use for both "cat" and "female genitalia". And indeed in Finnish it also means both of them, though of course "cat" is the official meaning while the latter is slang.
