also there are 3 ways of opening doors: lockpicking, magic, & beating it down. #3 will always* work, but it will wear out your weapon, and probably attract attention. (unless the door says it is "magically held locked" when you try to open it, i don't know much about this, i think i've seen it once)

The weakest spell that can be made with the "Open" effect will always open doors to all town and city residences. This will also serve nicely as a fine practice spell for Mysticism.

On a related note, there is a fairly easy, low risk, way for anyone to practice their lock-picking skill. Go to any walled city and try each of the doors that lead into the walls once. You will rarely succeed, but as long as you only try each door only once, you will not alert the guards.

Ah, after reading posts in this thread, I felt urge to start playing thief again :-)
So I made Khajiit Thief (vanilla), escaped Privateer's Hold, and started looting tombs and graveyard. Unfortunately every other rat seems to carry some form of disease, so i had to spend good fortune on healing, but otherwise, it is great!

One popular way to make money is to travel around at night and perform "cat burglary" - once you have a wagon, you can lockpick your way into closed shops and loot everything into your wagon, and sell it the next day. This is a good way to raise your lockpicking as if you fail, no worries, go on to the next store and the next store.

I would advise you acquire the "Open" spell anyway, for those crucial "must open" doors or if you're lazy. :P

Beware - I had this problem with my thief. You may not have enough Spell Points, in which case you may need to up your intelligence a bit. The standard vanilla thief class mostly utilizes Strength and Agility for its skills, but you should get enough intelligence to at least be able to use open, levitate, and recall once or twice before your spell points are emptied out.

I did my first quest! I stole a short shirt from some house and I got a note saying:

Alabane Wicksmith

Kirkbeth Hamlet

I'm assuming I have to go to a place called Kirbeth Hamlet, and find a person named Alabane Wicksmith. :)
Am I right?

I'm excited.

I stole a Holy Dagger, it's worth 2,500 gold. Should I sell it?

It's not equippable, right? Yeah, sell it. Daggerfall has a bunch of generic "religious" items such as idols, tomes, ceremonial daggers, etc. They have no use, they're just good money.

Once you start amassing gold in DF, which can get ridiculously easy, don't forget the banking system. Get large amounts of gold converted to letters of credit (you have deposit it first), keeping only a few hundred in coin.

Good job - I never made it to be in the thieves guild, I always wondered how to get in, but now I, or we know. =)
