Best DLC? (Point Lookout included)

Post » Thu Apr 15, 2010 9:58 am

I only saw one topic on this and it didn't have PL so I added it :P

So I have Broken Steel and Point Lookout. So far I like Point Lookout way more because how it has a whole new area, survival horror elements, civil war feeling, plenty of RPG element choices, and cool weapons and trophies. I like Broken Steel because it has the new weapons, perks, level cap, enemies, and continuation. But I like PL more. I want to get a new DLC The Pitt sounds good but it sounds glitchy, OP is all combat and you can only go there once, and MZ is all combat and sounds like it gets boring. Which one do you like the best?? (includes BS and PL)
Which one should I get???

Theyre all good except O:A. it's boring as hell if you like fallout for it's post-apocolypse theme.

edit: rockies reminded me. It's good for some awesome equipment though.

my least favorite is point lookout, the reason is there are no towns, no settlements, nobody to interact with really except a person here or there. its mostly all water if you look at the map, no big complexes or buildings to go in, there isn't a lot of exploration to point lookout, unless you think swampland and water is good for exploring. they could of put a few actual towns there with some people. the pitt is way better for exploring and more immersive, too bad the pitt was so small, but i still think its the best dlc for game immersion and exploration. broken steel is good and OA is good mainly because i like gauss rifle. but point lookout svcks and i hope to never see dlc like that again, the quests were good in point lookout actually but the georgraphy of the land was lousy and there just too much water, way too much, water everywhere.

I can see your point, but I like it due to the fact that it's VERY different from the CW so it's a good refresher. But my main reason is in the CW I just walk around without a care in the world were in point lookout I feel like I'm in a survival horror game where almost no one is alive but me and I have no one on my side to help me. I know there are people who just like settlements and cities and I like them too but playing Point lookout is fun because it is different. Besides, you don't have to stay for long. Just get all the trophies and sick guns and stuff and leave. That's what I did. Sometimes it's good to hang out in rural country for a while, out from the bustling towns and cities. That's what PL is for. But everyone has their own opinion.

I spent 13 hours in Point Lookout the first time and didn't even finish/find everything out there. I was exploring. And I wasn't swimming. You are absolutely right that there are not any towns, but the place is littered with little things to find and look through. It's just like the Capital Wasteland that way. You must have missed all of that.

@OP - I don't really think of BS in the same category as the other DLC. It gives us more levels, more creatures and makes some changes to the CW and changes the MQ. It's more of a "have to have" and less of an option. Of the others my favorite is PL; mostly for the reasons I stated to westoftherockies. There is a lot of detail out there and it reminds me the most of the CW and I can just roam out there. It's great. The Pitt is gorgeous, has one questline that is boring in parts and much too short. It's worth doing, but I find it's only repeatable beyond the first time to see what the alternate ending is like. Well, except for the rewards. But that's more of a pain than a joy. Same with O:A. It has the best gear but I think it gets old doing it over and over again.

From your post, I think you would enjoy The Pitt more, however be warned that the questline is pretty short. You get some great loot from it and you can go back if you want but there's really only one reason to go back and you may have no need for it. There is some exploring to do but it is confined to a couple of areas; one of them is easily overlooked.
Length-wise, you get the most for your money with Zeta. It will likely last you between 5-10 hours, there's more stuff than you can possibly carry and you can revisit part of the ship after finishing the quests.
Anchorage has some good loot but is really short. You will be finished with it in about two hours. It's fun if you just want to mindlessly shoot things but that's about it. The scenery is a nice change of pace.

Totally agree with that it took me hours just to see and get everything. Very much like the Capitol Wasteland. Def my fav DLC

Ghouls gave you a really good assessment of the other three. I'd have a hard time choosing between them. O:A has the best loot IMO but the gameplay is short and shootery. The Pitt the best story and scenery and some pretty good loot and MZ has the worst story (I couldn't wait to get off the ship) and some pretty good loot. So it probably depends on what you want the most. The loot or the quality of the gameplay. Are you only going to be getting one? You might think about building a character around the loot you get and do it that way. That might help you decide as the loot is pretty different from each one.

Well I only have so much money and New Vegas is coming soon so I don't really want to buy the worst first.

edit: BTW I like gameplay more so The Pitt seems like the thing for that.

Point Lookout is definitely my favorite. Love the atmosphere and it's play-style is the most similar to the CW.....it's basically open ended with many quests and things to find.

I'd suggest getting the Pitt next....it's got a pretty good story and unique look. A nice but short main quest and a few sidequests, although one quest is glitchy.

MZ and OA are ok....but they are just too linear....you're basically just following one course of action(a little variation in MZ). The loot is good though.

Get the Pitt

it seems like point lookout was rushed a bit, the atmosphere was ok, but it needed at least two settlements, with people at each one, some friendly faction patrolling the area here and there, they could of put in a nice ghost type town, like the area in new jersey called the pine barrens with all the old civil war ghost towns, that would of been cool, but PL needed some large complexes to explore, something that takes a while, like the capitol building, or the chryslus building or the roosovelt academy, those places had great indoor battlezones, you can only do so much with a swamp, most of the map was water, the area may of been big, but it was mostly ocean and swamp, so to me it felt small, it doens't even take that long to get to the detention camp, like 5 minutes, maybe a big military base would of been cool, the only thing that saved PL was the quests, they were pretty good. but terrain and geography plus the lack of a single settlement is a real bummer and so i only go there to get workmans overalls, some loot and the backwater rifle then i leave for good.

I don't think it was rushed it actually feels to me like they put in a lot of detail like putting in actual memorials that are really at Point Lookout etc. I agree I like the quests. But when you're in the swamp you're supposed to feel lost (hard to get that with your pip boy) and like there's really no good place to hide or any buildings. But of course if always being around "Civilization" (fallout 3 inside joke) is your thing, no problem

In my opinion, Point Lookout is the best, simply because it's actually more of an expansion pack than a DLC (it's actually worth 800 ms). The main story is short, but there's a great eerie atmosphere, a few new weapons & armour, and a ton of other sidequests. You could spend a good 15 hours there on your first playthrough, and you'll likely end up coming back.

If you want great equipment, then you could get Operation: Anchorage. Unfortunately, it's very short and the gameplay itself I think is below par (just a shooter), but you learn a lot about the Fallout universe before that war and the rewards are drool-worthy.

You'll want to buy Broken Steel if you want to play after the MQ and raise the level cap. But it does come with a few disadvantages: 'creature' companions become glitched and will never die; ridiculously over powered bullet sponge enemies start to appear; and you might be pissed off with the quests, as you'll find out you have little choice in what happens...

I'm a stupid fool who hasn't played Pitt yet, so I can't comment. Though, I've heard the atmosphere is fantastic, the story is gripping and there's lots of goodies dotted around the place.

*spits at the thought of Mothership Zeta*

We do indeed. At first, I only wanted to buy 3 DLCs 'cos I like money for other things, and it was a toss up between The Pitt and O: A. I am ashamed to say I picked Anchorage simply because the rewards were better, even if the gameplay svcked. On the other hand, Pitt would have provided a great atmosphere, gripping story and some pretty good equipment to boot.

I'll probably buy The Pitt sometime this week. Mothership Zeta can go to hell for all I care.

I agree I will probably buy the Pitt this week but that will probably be my last DLC. I might get OA but that would be in the distant future I got New Vegas coming up I can't go spending my money on Fallout 3 DLCs that are crap.

Broken Steel adds a lot to the game. It allows you to keep playing after the Purifier, adds 2-3 sidequests depending on what you did to Megaton, and some ass-kicking new weapons. I feel that Reavers and Overlords are a bit overpowered but it's always a lot of fun.

Of the ones you don't have The Pitt is the most fun to play but O:A has the best rewards. O:A is very linear and there's really only one way to do it. The Pitt is a great storyline with a challenging choice at the end of it.

The DLCs all have their own reviews, for comparison using IGN:
Operation: Anchorage - 7.8
The Pitt - 7.5
Broken Steel - 8.5
Point Lookout - 8.5
Mothership Zeta - 7

I think the Pitt should've had a higher score, but it is a bit short I guess.

I mostly agree with rockies comments about point lookout, the fun or novelty though was having somewhere new to go outside of the wasteland. I had to use the wiki for point lookout because I thought I had missed a load of content but I hadn't. Anchorage puts me to sleep. The first playthrough was fine, enjoyable for brief periods but I came to resent having to do the DLC to get the items I wanted at the end, thankfully door unlock commands came to my rescue.

I enjoyed the pitt most of all for the same reasons explained in other peoples posts, followed by mothetship zeta (characters, environment, storyline, equipment, even more equipment!) , supurb replayability for those 2 DLC for me but not everyones cup of tea I know.

However broken steel adds so much to the vanila game in terms of levels, perks, new quests, few new enemies, no forced ending etc. Although the pitt is my favourite I always recommend people get Broken Steel first.

Most disapointing is Mothership Zeta becasue of the bugs, save often so you can reload if needed...

Anchorage is the most profitable, and nets the best surge of xp.
The Pitt is mostly for the 'experience'.

Point Lookout is the best add-on outta the game. Then Broken Steel.

Out of the 3 (TP, MZ, OA); The Pitt is the best because you can revisit the place; adds tons of new armor & weapons and has the best story out of the 3.
