For instance it appears that Arch Mage Traven was once the head of the Anvil Mages guild hall and in company with a young Carahil, fought a necromancer who was devastating the town. That seems to be the reason for his banning necromancy once he became Arch Mage.
My favorite involves Falanu Hlallu.
Along the gold road, east of the Rumare there is a burnt out building with a sign out front that reads "All Things Alchemical'. There is also an Alchemy shop in Skingrad with the same shop name run by Falanu. She can be found visiting a cemetery each morning before opening her shop. She has been known to inquire about the penalty for necrophilia. Put them together and it would seem that she was married and her husband died in the fire that destroyed her original shop. Since she is a Dunmer, she is immune to fire and managed to escape.
I keep thinking there were other similar stories which were not quest related to be discovered through rumors and travel but I can't remember any specific ones.
