New to Skyrim mods - need tips!

Post » Tue Jul 16, 2013 2:58 am

Hi guys. I have taken a long break for Skyrim, and I only played it on PS3 back when I did. So I have absolutely no experience with Skyrim mods (although I have played extensively with MW and OB mods).

We are now going to buy a high-end PC that can play Skyrim on highest settings, and including graphic mods. So while my boyfriend takes care of the computer buying, I'm on the lookout for good mods to Skyrim. Here's a list of what I'm looking at:

- Good graphic enhancer mods

- RP-mods (Not necessarily mods that make the game harder, but more RP-stuff/immersion in general)

- New areas/towns/quests

- New guilds (would love new guilds!)

- More and new perks

- Class system mods (Yes, I miss classes)

- Crafting extended mods

- More marriage partners (especially for Khajiit and other races with few vanilla options)

I don't know how much of this list exists even as mods, and I will of course have a good look at Nexus myself too, but any tips you can give me will be greatly appreciated. :)

Always install first:

- Unofficial Patches

- SkyUI

Then and only then you can start thinking additional mods.

RP Mods - For character management, Frostfall and Realistic Needs & Diseases. Makes you need heat, food/drink and sleep to survive. They are like combined hardcoe and immersion mods, but both can be customizable to your preferences so it doesn't feel too punishing. There are also some smaller good mods scattered out there which change things so the thieves guild and the likes isn't forced upon you if you don't want to play that type of character.

Before you start going crazy downloading and installing mods, take some time to watch some of the tutorial videos on this YouTube page.

These will give some knowledge about how mods work with Skyrim, as well as introduce you to some essential tools you'll need to help make everything work together.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/18866/ is the main new guild mod I know of that's publicly and actively being worked on. For better roleplaying within the existing guilds, have a look at my http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/22650/ and the http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14157/.

Since you only mention looking at the Nexus, I'd also suggest you look into the http://steamcommunity.com/id/ThirteenOranges/myworkshopfiles/?appid=72850 that are only available on Steam--he has both a series of "places" and a series of "quests" and both are excellent.

Check out http://wiki.step-project.com/Main_Page and http://www.skyrimgems.com/ for some ideas and info. Some specific mods I would recommend:

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21587

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29624/?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1175/?

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9959/?

An interesting Alchemy mod is http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/16665/? . It's a radical departure from vanilla and it has some inconsistencies, but it's pretty good. I've had to change all the names for myself as I couldn't stand all the contemporary chemical names in it, but there's a lot to like about the approach taken in it, especially as I found vanilla alchemy in Skyrim to just be a disappointingly crappy version of Oblivion's system (which I quite liked).
