Is this standard for most thanes in Skyrim? Why is my housecarl...in my house? Is there any way to get her to live somewhere else? I have my wife in here, a rabbit, a dog, and 2 adopteds. It's getting very crowded in Proudspire manor.

Most? Lol ALL the thanes are sent to your house.
The fact you're required to get a house to be a thane and get your housecarl doesn't help.
Is it really that bad a thing to have Jordis living in your house?
You mean all Housecarls are sent to the Thane's (your) house.
He'd have Hearthfire, he said in the first post he has kids with a pet rabbit. Though if you don't like having people in your house I wouldn't recommend building a manor. In addition to family members there is the potential to have a Steward, Housecarl and bard.
Can take advantage of it. I built Windstad Manor, married Morwen and made Injard my steward. Ingjard seems to sleep in the upstairs double bed, whenever I see her on that bed it's always fun to click on the bed, rest for 1 hour.
You're complaining about Jordis ?? Try living with Gregor. He has the whole house to walk around in, which is ok with me. But he frequently visits my bedroom -- when I have the doors closed!
Late at night too!
I thought I built locks into those doors when I created them, I sure wish they would lock. Oh well maybe I should just hang out in the cellar, I don't think he goes down there
"Housecarl" (huskarl) literally means "house man." Originally they were free servants, later on the term was also used for bodyguards. So having one housecarl as your steward and another to guard your home is actually perfect. Marry another one and have 3. Have one from another house as your actual follower for a 4th. You're a bigshot with a manor, you should have a posse.
If I were on PC I'd get the mod for mutliple followers and take all my housecarls with me. Scildweall!
To answer the OP, no you cannot get Jordis to leave Proudspire Manor. She comes with the house, like the furniture. Well, there's the old "Uriah the Hittite" maneuver. Take her into a nasty fight. Oops, I accidentally hit her when she was low on health and she died! How tragic!
You don't actually have to become Thane to buy property. you can just buy the land once the Jarl suggests becoming thane.
my character just lives like a Hermit in Lakeview manor, and I didn't need to kill anyone to do so
