Did Bethesda make a mistake?

Post » Fri Jul 19, 2013 11:36 pm

I just started playing Skyrim and when I walked into Whiterun I heard the priest, Heimsker talk about how the elves wouldn't even accept the humans on EARTH. I've never played an Elder scrolls game before but I've been told the world they live on isn't Earth. So was this just a mistake by Bethesda or is there planet actually Earth?

1

: the fragmental material composing part of the surface of the globe; especially: cultivable soil
3
a: areas of land as distinguished from sea and air
b: the solid footing formed of soil : ground

Also appropriate
: the sphere of mortal life as distinguished from spheres of spirit life — compare heaven, hell

either they made a mistake or Heimskr means earth (the land, ground)

I think they made a mistake.

earth is not capitalized, therefore they are talking about the physical substance. The planet is still called Nirn, but the land of which it is comprised of is called "earth". earth and water.

I didn't take that into account. Of course I have seen them make mistakes in sub titles to.

They also have a spriggan with that included in its title. I don't think it's a mistake; it's just a general term for the world.

I have heard and seen the term "earth" several times in Elder Scrolls. For example, in the following book on the Falmer in Skyrim, Fourth paragraph "it descended. Into the earth, deep underground"

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Falmer:_A_Study

I don't think it is a mistake. It is earth in the sense of the ground, or maybe a slang for the world. It is not Earth (capital "E") in the sense of a particular planet.

Bethesda is a bit like Sheldon Cooper. One mistake regarding Heimskr's speeches, sure - but two? :D

true but earth is only referred to as such because it's what we call the planet that the soil sits on...therefore the word earth shouldn't exist in TES because the planet is called Nirn. They should have a similar statement but say of nirn and sea or un-nirn something from the ground ;)

poor attention to detail again.

I've thought about it a little longer and i still think it was a mistake. I mean they couldn't be using earth to describe land in general. For example, if you were on a mythical planet you wouldn't say, it landed straight on the earth because you wouldn't know about earth.

I imagine translating the Common Tongue language of Nirn to English so we can understand what's going on had more to do with it then poor attention to detail. I doubt English is common language of the universe that all planets with intelligent life use to communicate with each other.
