Nightblade*ish* character viable in Skyrim?

Post » Sat Jul 20, 2013 1:13 am

I don't have a huge amount of experience playing Skyrim, and the characters I've made in the past havn't been hybrid type characters. I've read a few "guides" online about Nightblade type characters (Stealth, Blade, and some magic are what I'm calling a Nightblade for this topic, other's definitions may vary) but most of those seem to be theory craft with no real experience playing the character they've created.

I'm not looking to min/max but more curious to know if a character with some blade skill (armsman 5, maybe up to some of the dual wield perks), sneak (backstab perks), then Alteration (for paralyze and magic resist), conjuration (soul trap, and bound weapons .... more for rp purposes, and no summon or reanimate .. doesnt fit the character I'm thinking of), illusion (I'd probably want to max this out), Resto (enough to heal outside of battle anyway), and some destruction would actually be a viable character ... or am I spreading my perks way to thin over too many skills?

I'm skipping smithing (since I play on normal smithing is just op), enchant (see smithing), lockpicking (the perks help but aren't really needed ... from what little I've played anyway), and any armor skill (I plan on using the Lord stone for some armor .. more importantly spell resist .. and not getting hit as my defense).

I haven't really planned out anything, I'll probably do what I always do .. dive in and just start playing the character and hope that skills aren't spread too thin ... even so any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Well, if you play on adept, then pretty much anything is viable. You would have to go out of your way to make an unviable character.

Combining blade, sneak and invisibility (illusion) will make a very powerful character. I don't think it matters that much how thin you spread your character with those skills and when you add paralyze (alteration) and distractions and meat shields (conjuration) you are again picking up some powerful skills. I'd worry more about being overpowered than underpowered with this build.

Dragons are about the only thing sneak doesn't work on very well. They might be a little tough but with a little elemental magic resistance and five perks in blades an you should be fine. You can stagger them with the impact perk in destruction if I recall correctly but it's been a long time since I have taken that perk because I find it too OP.

It is viable, but Destruction will require some Training (either by Trainer or constant usage on Wildlife in Game). Managing Perk assignment can be a chore, Illusion is an all or nothing School. Destruction can be invalidated by using a Bound Bow from Sneak. Alteration can allow a Bound Sword Wielder to survive a mistake or two in spacing and timing of a Power Attack.

I have been playing variations of a Bound Sword Dual Wielder, and being aggressive is the Key to surviving a Melee batle in cloth after being discovered.

Or you can just calm the enemy putting yourself back in sneak mode. This play style is actually one of the most broken in terms of being incredibly strong...especially a stealth, dual wielding, illusion type character.

Destruction probably wouldn't help a whole lot with this build, except maybe for dragons. Dual wielding can take care of them easily enough though, if you are smart with your shouts

I will admit after reading these few posts I made a Khajiit that will follow this mold, I've never tried it I'm accustomed to Redguards and Orcs that just slice or smash everything up and can build their own gear
