Smithing Gold Coins at Forge

Post » Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:34 am

I'm surprised we can't do this.(Especially after the feature to counterfeit casino chips was introduced in Fallout New Vegas' Dead Money addon)

I doubt that they have very good ways of verifying the authenticity of gold coins in Tamriel, so there should have been an option for a player with a high smithing skill, or maybe an extra piece of equipment like a mold(one that could be stolen in an unrelated quest), to be able to make counterfeit Septims from Gold Ingots at the forge.

Maybe.. 1 Ingot = 50 Gold

Seems reasonable, since raw gold is hard to come by and unless you're properly equipped, transmuting iron ore is very time consuming.

smithing gold coins at a forge would mean your character is making fake septims.

One of the smithing mods lets you turn coins into gold bars and gold bars into coins. Thing about gold coins is that as long as they contain the right amount of gold there is nothing dishonest about making your own.

The merchants and people I bribe won't know that. :P

That would be completely useless; becoming rich is not a problem in these games.

I dunno... they can tell when an Item is stolen... even if its a potato stolen from a farm on the otherside of the province...
Im sure they would have ways of knowing...

and this... so much this...

That touches on a larger precedent as well.

You should arguably be able to convert anything back and forth. Like melting down armor back into the metals it is made from(would make saluaging a lot more worthwhile) to use in forging something else.

And? Not everybody likes to accomplish things the same way.

Options are everything in these games, and the option to counterfeit should be there, even if it would just be exclusive to the thieves guild questline or something similar.

You can also remove the stolen tag from an item if you know what to do(dump the loot you want to launder in the chest in the alchemy lab in Breezehome and make your follower take it out).

Pretty easy to mod. Go ahead! People might like it. And, no, the option shouldn't be there.

PS3 user. Can't mod, otherwise I'd have Skyrim as far from vanilla as possible.

I dunno, that might be kinda cool if done right. Maybe a little something on the side for the theives guild maybe? It's just a thought, after all, New Vegas had a counterfeit bottle cap press you had to destroy.

Economics was not exactly something they considered when making Skyrim: They have a currency based on gold (and other metals, too, probably), and they have spells that turn iron into gold. Every Jarl should have a bunch of wizards toiling away at producing as much gold as possible, and as everyone can cast spells, and spells never fail, gold should be way more abundant than carrots and green apples.
Obviously, they didn't care about these things.

Also, they whole smithing workshop is obviously a huge simplification. You don't create coins at a smithy like they have in the game. You need an engraver to create a die, and after that, an anvil. Creating armour or weaponry is even more complicated. And as we've already simplified the whole process to this extent, not being able to mint coins is simply another side of this. You can turn gold bars into coins quite easily: Just sell them.
To call for "realism" in one area and ignoring it elsewhere, is rather random.

Also, as JasmoVT pointed out, coins usually get their value from their contents of precious metals. You don't gain anything if you make Septims out of gold. You're probably losing out. You get rich by turning *other* metals into Septims and trying to have them look like gold.

Or you could just sell the gold ingots/ore. Same difference, right?

I'd rather see some sort of magic fabrication - like using an arcane enchanter to create soul gems. Gold and money are so easy to accumulate that, if it wasn't for the speech skill, I'd stop looting and selling as soon as I've got a place to live.

Why the hell are you being such an arrogant [censored]? The guy was asking for opinions and giving a pretty fun idea. If you are a law-addict or something then just limit yourself from doing it. It would actually be pretty fun and it's not about being hard to make money, it's about the RP!

Some people just can't leave without being arrogant and disrespectful.

That would be cool but it would mean you could have a very rich character in a very short time, especially if you

Spoiler
clear out Kolskeggr Mine

But it would be nice for RP purposes, like if you RP as a rich nobleman or something.

Lol if someone wanted to follow the laws or be a goody-two-shoes I would recommend not playing Skyrim in the first place.
