Is New vegas Worth 10 bucks to me?

Post » Tue Jul 23, 2013 10:23 pm

I've played Fallout 3, and although i have not even BEGUN to get near the halfway point in the actual storyline, i do find it exceptionally fun, and full of things to occupy my time, with replayability and more. and although i do not like SOME mechanics of the game, such as the movement mechanics, it is still VERY fun and i enjoy it alot.

I've been looking at fallout new vegas for a bit now, and although i have seen some reviews go up that it is a good game, i keep getting the same thing from them. it's a great game to play but its not better than fallout 3, and that the bugs are massive and plentiful. granted, these are OLD reviews, so bugs could have been fixed, but i have no idea.

SO, back to my questions. Is Fallout New Vegas worth 10 bucks for me to get it on steam? and what notible bugs are there that could ruin it for me if you know any? PLease help me understand and help me find out if i should get this game. im a fan of 3, and sadly my money situation is kind of hellish right now, so it's either a yes or no to New Vegas.

Well, let's see...

The game was released in 2010, DLCs being released shortly after, so it is technically an "old" game. It is also exclusively single-player, and yet you see the forums still buzzing with people asking questions and talking about the game.

Bugs are minor, in my opinion, and do not affect gameplay (consoles may have more issues though).

Now tell me, how many SINGLE PLAYER games out there are still so popular and talked about after 3 years in the market?

Yeah, not many.

So my answer is yes. It's definitely worth it, and even more.

That was actually your question, a "yes or no to New Vegas", so I couldn't answer "maybe" or "hmm..." or "I don't know" :D

The game does not have any bugs to worry about. I never even used an Unofficial Patch until this year.

Tecnically? The Vat's play a good role when taking on multiple enemies, which is tough even with big skill points, making you think about what you should do and when.

Gameplay wise, i love the whole choice making and karma/morals thing it does. i mean, who's TRULY good or TRULY bad in any scenario, pre or post apocolyptic? choosing to be one or the other is cool to me.

and the way you can enjoy the new enviroments you come into was nice. the first time i seen the Citadel was amazing, compared to when i seen the unique defense position of the outcasts. Wasteland or ruins, new places didn't feel the same all the time.

I know i asked for only a yes or no, but you made the explination seem like if i said no to new vegas, i couldnt get my money';s worth with another game that could be like it but better.

Only remaining bugs to watch for:

-A guy called Loyal asks you to retrieve a plane from a lake. This same guy is needed in another optional quest. Once you retrieve the plane, the hangar he hangs out in actually gets replaced entirely by a new cell that includes the plane inside it. If Loyal is in the old cell (old hangar) when the cell refreshes, he's cut off from you forever. This is easily fixed with console commands on PC, and if you're not on PC, you can workaround this by making sure that it's night and he's in his house when you turn in the quest, then leave the area until the cell refreshes (the area is kind of out-of-the-way, so it's pretty much a given you won't return here unless you need to).

-The Gomorrah casino permanently confiscates companion weapons. Easily remedy'ed by not bringing them inside, since the place you dismiss your companions to and tell them to wait is literally across the street, so it's not a hassle whatsoever.

-Lever-action rifles can get a bug that makes VATS stall; not permanently, but rather your character just sits there for a good 10 seconds before firing. Luckily, the bug is visible/predictable. Basically, never enter VATS immediately after reloading. Likewise, if you go into third person view and check the gun, you'll notice the lever or bolt sticking out awkwardly as an indicator you have the glitch. Sometimes you can "feel" the glitch too in that your character randomly sidesteps EVER so slightly to the side after reloading. The bug is fixed either by holstering and re-drawing the weapon or simply firing a shot out of Vats, THEN entering Vats.

That's it. Every other bug is more-or-less fixed.

-VATS in FO3 actually maxed out your damage reduction and made you take 10% of normal damage. It made you god-like. VATS in New Vegas is nerfed and only reduces incoming damage by 25%, and only targeted enemies will see a significant slow-down.

-FO:NV has FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR more choices to make. The quest list for New Vegas absolutely curbstomps the quest list for FO3, and the quests aren't smaller either. Hell, I'm going to be-so-bold and say that if you were to play New Vegas, you would look back on the conflicts of FO3 and call them mere childsplay, as the choices in New Vegas are lots more morally grey and not so black and white.

-Exploration in New Vegas is often the point criticized most as "the only thing New Vegas didn't beat FO3 in." Realize it takes place in a damned desert, and while FO3 had the attitude of "let's make locations fun and interesting," New Vegas had the attitude of "let's make the game realistic." Prime example: Both FO3 and New Vegas feature a community that has a shop of sorts down the street from it. In FO3, that location is overrun with raiders and resources, and likely the player's first "dungeon." In New Vegas? That shop is picked clean, devoid of almost any and all resources. Why? Because a community is right ****ing there. Of COURSE they've been there and picked it clean. Likewise, a location in FO3 could take 20 mins+ to explore, whereas in New Vegas they range anywhere from 1 minute to 10. New Vegas shoots for realism on this front.

Basically, realize that New Vegas is far more focused on questing, but in doing so, there's far more conflict and choice involved in gameplay.

yeah, the game was badly bugged on launch, but the really bad stuff got patched. There are plenty of mods to fix any other little issues.

Thanks for the bug tips. Not too bad, and considering im getting it for PC, shouldn't stop me at all.

as for the Vats, hell, it just makes it more of a challenge!ANd i do so enjoy a challenge.

and i write fanfiction, and make it a realistic type of fanfiction as best i can, so i understand realism, and in a damn desert with many people there, what ISN't picked clean is the real question. so i understand and it does nto deter me.

SO thank you very much.

In FO3 I remember doing a playthrough that was pure FPS, and it svcked. It was so difficult and it felt like my bullets were somehow missing targets in front of me.

Then I did a VATS playthrough and it was the easiest thing ever.

Later I discovered it was because a VATS user only takes 10% damage and is award 15% additional crit. This is HUGE considering weapons are usually in disrepair; while a hunting rifle might be almost broken and doing 11 damage per shot instead of it's potential 25, the crit damage is constant, so critting meant you more than doubled your damage output, usually.

In New Vegas it's sort of the opposite. Pure VATS gameplay is definitely doable with certain weapons, but oftentimes you'll find yourself asking yourself if VATS is a smart move. VATS is typically increased accuracy at the cost of your character being vulnerable in FO:NV. So yeah, if you can aim, you typically want to avoid it (though again, some weapons excel with VATS). And yeah, the stats for VATS now are 75% of normal damage and only 5% bonus crit.

As for your love of fanfiction, I think you'd appreciate New Vegas for that reason alone. FO3 had the Brotherhood and the Enclave as factions, then on the side, the Regulators, Talon Company and Reilly's Rangers played pretty insignificant roles.

In New Vegas? NCR, Legion, Powder Gangers, Great Khans, Followers of the Apocalypse, the Kings, Mr. House, Brotherhood of Steel and the Boomers all function as influencial factions that interact with one another. There's more, but those feel like the most significant. But roleplaying their different interactions with each other can be pretty fun; the game gives you a lot of content to write off of.

But yeah, with locations, typically the only ones that aren't picked clean are either far away from any communities or have some form of defense that's kept people from looting them.

One more thing: get the Ultimate Edition because New Vegas DLCs are the first DLCs I ever played where I truly felt like I got my money's worth.

And make sure you do the DLCs in release order.

Dead Money -> Honest Hearts -> Old World Blues -> Lonesome Road

Any other order on your first time is nonsense. Schize.

I think you will like New Vegas a lot. BUY IT.

You may find the world less thrilling but from what you said about choices I have a feeling this game is right up your alley.

Yes but there will be a message telling you when you've reached "the point of no return" so you can save beforehand. Really, a play after the ending feature would have been too much work for the devs because of how much the choices affect the world so they left it out.

If you beat the game, just load a save from before you beat it.

Your game will make an autosave before you start the final battle, just reload it and you'll be good.

There has to be a mod that allows you to play on after the final battle, no?
