Daggerfall v2.13 in DOSBox twist on multi-chars

Post » Fri Apr 16, 2010 4:13 pm

Just picked up Daggerfall again, after years of ignoring it, and having never progressed far in it to begin with due to seriously buggered hardware in the mid 90s (remember SiS-based AGP graphics adapters? I had one. CR@P!), I'm now noticing something a bit strange.. I have two characters I've just created as I've gone along. The first of them (Breton rogue-ish sort) got to a point wherein I had a quest in a dungeon that was kicking my butt (I pretty much didn't have enough life to progress far into it without needing to rest, which I couldn't do inside due to nearby enemies, and exiting resets the dungeon, so I'm stuck in a loop). I then started the second character (Redguard Archer). Weird thing is, with the Redguard, I'm getting comments from NPCs about, "Aren't you the Breton that killed the monsters in (such and such tavern)?" which is of course a quest completed by the other character. How in the heck are my quests bleeding between characters?

That's rather odd seeing as each character has their own rumor file. Have you played as both characters in the same session (w/o quitting DF)? it may be that the game is not clearing the rumors from it's memory between loads; so if you load one character and then load the other, they may bleed together. Just hypothesizing, but it's possible.

I don't pay much attention to rumors, so I haven't noticed if this happens a lot

I've actually exited back to WinXP between characters. Probably didn't do it EVERY TIME (which may be enough to allow hypothetical bleed, and now that games are saved, maybe I'm stuck with it).

I'm not overly concerned about it, BUT, was initially wondering if it translates to the possibility that other things may have also bled, but the ambiguous "other things," are in my subconscious and probably more recent developments in Bethesda algorithms, so not to be worried about (such as enemy levelling & the like). I think I need to review my gameplay strategy, 'cause I'm getting my @ss handed to me in each character it would seem. I do a few errand quests, then get a quest that takes me to a dungeon, and I'm not ready for it yet. For instance, the second character came to a dungeon (where someone I need to help me with a riddle secluded himself to study archane sciences, etc), and it's full of giant scorpions, which paralyze me in one sting, then take their sweet time knocking my life down to nil before I become un-paralyzed. *GAH!*

Strategically, I'm probably just not very good at RPGing.. I must say, though, that as much a fan of glossy graphics as I am, and I've been enjoying Fallout immensely since release (as I did Oblivion & Morrowind before), the infectious draw that Daggerfall had on me initially, even WITH the bugs I often couldn't work through, is still there, and my current system running DOSBox seems to be far more stable and capable than my old system w/ Win95 or Win98 ever was for this game.

By the way.. Do I get any bonus points for NOT asking how to get it running under DOSBox on my PC? *heh heh* I did have a bit of trouble with Arena & D'fall both, but managed to muddle my way through with UESP & the (who'd have guessed?) readme file.

I didnt ask either, but yeah you sure do in my book, haha! Besides, I have major character restart-itis and it kills me. I do it on a lot of RPGs. But I am tending to stop doing that now. I seem to not be able to make up my mind for some reason. But yeah I have 1 character thats a battlemage, which is a Dark Elf, whom is well rounded with thievery as well. So Im set.

@Jormungandr:

BTW, thanks for the stuff you have linked in your sig. I feel only slightly dirty for having watched your walkthrough of the final dungeon in Daggerfall (at a ridiculously late at night time, I might add). That actually looks more like Half Life than Elder Scrolls, but I suppose that's mostly because I just never got far in Daggerfall to begin with. I think I ended up giving up somewhere around the first visit to Lysandius' tomb (or somebody's tomb) when I just couldn't ride the elevators without falling through the floors/walls into the black nether. No, not very far into the game at ALL (thanks much, SiS)!

Luckily I was already familiar with Dosbox from running the older Warcraft games (part one and two).

I use D-fend (a front end for dosbox). Cuts down the time on having to edit the config file.

Well, FWIW, I don't really have any problems related to DOSBox or the .conf file, I suppose (following the UESP guide to setup was fairly easy & straightforward). It's either ill-advised over-writing of saves or vanilla Daggerfall v2.13 issues.

I hate, HATE the fact that I'm being svcked back into this game.. I thought I was being svcked into Fallout3, dammit, and I'm not done exploring that world, and here I go plunging back into the biggest game world EVAR and I have sh!te to do in the real world that I don't have time for.. *grrrrrr*

You, too? Actually, I finished fallout 3 with my wife, then she started complaining that she had already cleared the map (which svcked since I bought her the game for christmas), so I finally talked her into trying morrowind on the Xbox. I've been trying to get her to play MW since she finished OB. Problem is, that leaves me with nothing to play, so I'm back to playing DF on my PC since she has the television occupied fulfilling the prophecy of azura. :P

What's it like to be with a chick that not only condones gaming but participates? Wait.. Maybe that's not so good (on a collective fitness level, anyway)? *heh heh* My sig-other can't get into any of it. I've tried with stuff like Eleventh Hour & stuff (she's a scientist, so...), but no go. At least she feels confident she knows where I am & what I'm doing when I'm gaming.. Of course, the dog simply doesn't understand. He just mopes..

Well, I'm the scientist in my family (biologist) and my wife's a stay-at-home-mom/college student. That means she gets to play video games all day. You'd figure it'd be my turn when I get home, but alas she's a controller hog. I always said if I met a chic who liked the same movies, music, and video games as me I'd marry her. I found her, so I did. Sadly, it's not all it's cracked up to be since you have to share the controller on 1 player games. The only time I get to touch my Xbox is when we play halo or guitar hero. LOL. j/k

Seriously, though, she's not that bad. She's actually pretty good at TES, and she even plays pen and paper RPG's like D&D and card games like MTG. I married a bigger nerd than me. :P

You DO know there's a solution to this... It's called, "buy an additional console." heh heh Actually, I'd recommend this solution, as it may prolong your marriage significantly.. (heh.. I kill me..)

See, my current problem of your sort is simply that we only have one HD TV, and I'm pretty much forbidden from gaming on it, unless she's doing a Reserve exercise or extended business trip. Perhaps after Uncle Sam graces me with the money he wrongfully took from me over the past year, I can finally splurge on a second big Samsung?

Perhaps we could hit up BestBuy/CircuitCity/Crutchfiled/Buy.com/Amazon together and get a group discount on a coupla' new TVs?

(edit: Right AFTER the SuperBowl, to insure stock-overage-discounts..)
