After some nostalgia that's been eating at me for awhile now, I decided to return to Oblivion. Last time I played it was on Xbox a few years ago.

Anyway, so I've been playing Skyrim on PC here with an Xbox controller as I have yet to fully transition to "pure PC gaming". I learned the hard way that Oblivion on PC has zero support for Xbox controllers...

Does anyone have any tips to transition from joystick to keyboard and mouse? I gave it a go and just now finished the tutorial. And it was... difficult. From accidentally pressing caps-lock when trying to maneuver left, and constantly forgetting where certain keys are(I'm a bad typer...)...

How long does it take to, "get used to it?" I would appreciate any input, especially from others who successfully transitioned from consoles to PC. What was your experience like?

you sure as i played oblivion on pc with my controller i gave up though cause at that point id played oblivion to death

After an hour you'll find a good way to position your hands that feels normal.
After a day of gaming it will all feel natural to you.

After that... you'll wonder how you ever played with a controller at the start

I looked up various ways. The only way which didn't involve downloading some "software" was ini tweaks.

I tried the ini tweaks, but the left and right triggers do not work... and it felt awkward.

Just play around with the keyboard and mouse in-game for a few hours. Eventually you get used to it, or atleast i did. I do still prefer using an xbox controller to play skyrim, but after 100+ hours of keyboard and mouse i can easily use either

Also i changed some of the key bindings to make gameplay easier. I know magic is c, when using f is so much more fluid. Also i'd leave caps lock on (or hit it in the menu and then hit it again in gameplay) so you don't have to hold down the running button

Also some of the mods for oblivion are amazing, and you can pretty much try something new every playthrough (just used ob xp, and it really breathed new life into the game)

Xpadder costs ten bucks and will get your Xbox controller working pretty well. I agree, those ini tweaks don't make the controller work well enough to play coming from a console.

I figure now's a good as ever reason to make the switch. Better to keep my options open rather than rely on a joystick...

Yeah, I'm trying to switch a few things around. But keyboarding just feels so "rigid"... I feel like a monkey that was explicitly trained for his whole life to use a joystick, and then forced to use a keyboard... Yeah, it's that bad in my case...

Oh man, I seriously want to believe you right now. I actually died once during the tutorial because my fingers have a mind of their own and keep pressing the wrong keys, and my right hand forgets to left click the mouse to attack!

practice makes perfect amigo, although with the difficulty knocked down you might have better luck with it

Yeah, that's what I'd do. Turn down the difficulty until you get the hang of it.

Don't forget that you can do forward and side movement at the same time, by holding two keys at once. Gotta stay in the shadows.

In the long run, I think you'll find mouse-keyboard more responsive. The mouse allows very fast and almost instant targeting, once you get used to it. You might want to experiment with the mouse acceleration settings, to get it comfortable.
