Giants and Lore : V

So, I used to regularly loot Giants' chest for valuables. I did this because I assumed they didn't actually *need* gold, jewels, shields, etc.

My question is... do they? I thought I heard something about them being "traders" but they're hostile towards any race that gets too close. Anything in the lore about this? Ideas?

They're territorial.

They do have means of communicating with other races. There is also cut civil war content that involved securing the aid of Giants for your chosen side. It seems logical to me that they may trade with the Nords or whatever "to some extent" at least.

The game tells you that you traded with him the first time. You brought him the goat, trying to get money to pay Ysolda. AFAIK the only non-violent way to get the goat back is to sneak in and out.

There are several things in the game suggesting trading with giants was originally planned for the game but was cut off.

I always assume that giants are some kind of mer. I'm not sure, but I think it's the pointy face.
