Spell Effect Help

Hey!

I'm new to the creation kit, and I've been trying to make a new spell. I've been able to get everything to work ok, but I'd like to know if it's possible to get more effects after choosing your delivery and casting type. I want to try to make a spell similar to Healing Hands, where it uses concentration and target actor. But whenever I have these two selected, all I can select from is restore health, stamina, and one other. I'm just wondering if it'd be possible to get fire damage or something else to work with the concentration and target actor settings.

Thanks,

-Hego

The effects you can choose depend on the settings in the spell. In the example you've given, choosing "Target Actor" limits your choices considerably, as that is a relatively rare target type. The most common delivery type for damaging spells is "Aimed". If you choose "Aimed," you'll notice you get a much larger list of effects you can add.

Basically, the delivery and casting type of the spell have to match the delivery and casting type of the Magic Effect you are adding to the spell. You can open up any magic effects you are interested in to see what casting and delivery types they use. For instance, the Magic Effect FireDamageConcAimed is the effect used for the Flames spell, and it uses "Concentration" and "Aimed" as its types (so do frostbite and sparks, and most other concentration-type spells).

If you wanted to, you could even create a concentration spell that simultaneously healed and applied fire damage to the target, though you'd have to make a new magic effect for one of them to make their delivery types the same.

Take a look at http://www.creationkit.com/spell for more info:

  • Aimed: Effect is attached to a http://www.creationkit.com/Projectile which is then fired at the crosshairs. If it makes contact with a valid target, the effect is applied.
  • Target Actor: Effect is immediately applied to an http://www.creationkit.com/Category:Actor in the crosshairs. No projectile is fired.

Hope that helps!

How would you go about making a new effect? I'd assume it's rather complicated, but I'd at least like to know how its done.

Starting from scratch would be tough until you get the hang of all the different options involved, but for now, you can just right-click on an effect that is similar to what you want to accomplish, and choose "duplicate". Then, open up your newly duplicated effect and give it a new ID and Name of your choosing. Then you can just edit whatever things you want to change, and it will remain mostly the same as the original effect besides the changes you've made. When you close the window, it will ask you if you want to make a new form, just click "No" (assuming you've already duplicated the effect--choosing yes will produce an additional duplicate, which you dont want) and then confirm with a "Yes" to the second popup.

So if you wanted to make healing hands an aimed spell, you could duplicate it and just changed the delivery type to aimed. It should work essentially the same, except that rather than instantly healing whoever is in the crosshairs, it will instead be (invisibly) shooting a "projectile"/stream at the target, kind of like the flames spell. This would be most noticeable if you were turning/moving while casting it, where it might take the spell a second or two to "catch up" to the cursor, unlike the original healing hands spell.

Reading the CK wiki should give you an idea what some of the other options will change in your new magic effect.
