Why aren't the Skall in Skyrim?

Post » Thu Aug 01, 2013 10:03 am

So, I've just arrived at Skall Village last night. And those are some pretty interesting Nords, far more interesting than the generic Nords of Skyrim.

Which made me wonder: Why are there no Nordic tribes like the Skaal in the northern parts of Skyrim? I think it would've made more sense lore-wise (though I'm probably wrong), and it would've made those bland frozen wastelands a lot more interesting.

Is 11-11-11 to blame? Or is there an actual lore explanation for no Nordic tribes in the Pale/Winterhold?

I personally think it's 11/11/11. Skyrim could have had so much more added in. Not complaining though, still think it's the greatest game to have ever been on the market IMO.

Its not 11/11/11 The skaal likes it in solstheim. its their current home. And yes i agree that skyrim could have much more if it wasnt for 11 11 11. But the skaal not being in skyrim has nothing to do with that

The Skaal only live on Solstheim. During the time of Morrowind, they only lived on solstheim too. Most nords didn't approve of the all-maker religion, so they left Skyrim.

Wasn't talking in particular about the Skaal. I was talking more about Skyrim in general.

It could be that Nords dont tolerate them, after all they dont have a very good record on that score in Skyrim do they and having some of their own who do not believe in their gods, well i imagine there would be repercussions.

Like others said, it didn't have anything to do with 11/11/11 (this time) Skaal lived on Solsthiem even in Morrowind 200+ years ago, they didn't llike whatever the nords were doing so they left

Though this is only speculation, it seems to me that part of the answer to your question is bolded in red. It would certainly explain why we know so little about the Ancient Nords, Falmer, and the Dwemer of Skyrim despite the fact that 3/4 or so of the game involves dungeon-diving into their ruins.

Also, if you read the lore of Skyrim from previous games, you'll find that A LOT of stuff was cut from TES V, including, but not limited to:

  • Isolated alpine villages that are not aware of the existence of the Empire
  • Werebears
  • Nordic polygamy
  • Cannibalism
  • The Nordic Pantheon

I also believe that many of the above things were cut out in order to appeal to a larger audience, which unfortunately resulted in Nords almost resembling Hollywood Vikings.

Oh, and to stay on topic, the Skaal only inhabit Solstheim because they are an isolated tribe. Their religion is probably the remnant of a older Atmoran one.

I know about werebeards but the others? tell me :) Nordic pantheon? you mean shor and ysmir/Wulfharth? And stuff about alduin. And Isolated villages that dont know about the empire? what?

And i dont think the nords are like hollywood vikings at all. a bit yeah. But as every race they have their own uniqueness to them

Yeah, Ysmir Wulfharth, the Nordic Pantheon and the Dragon Cult got very little exposure in Skyrim even though they factor largely into the background of the MQ.

Also, the stuff on the isolated villages and more are found in the PGEs and the Imperial Library.

In fact, MK even made a complete(?) roster of Ysgramor's 500 complete with back stories for each individual soldier.

I wasn't talking about the Skaal (noticed that I misspelt the name in the thread title ) specifically, I was asking why there are not any other Nordic tribes like the Skaal in the northern parts of Skyrim.

But if the lore makes sense, then... There should be a large mod project to put in everything that was cut for 11-11-11.

Then yeah, they were probably cut from the game due to time constraints and/or because they wanted to tone down the weirdness in order to cater to a larger audience.

What? Toning down the weirdness to attract more customers... Don't customers want to see something new and different?

Morrowind was awesome because of it's weirdness. Though it wasn't as popular, so what you're saying makes sense in a way. But still, Bethesda wouldn't have removed the weird parts for that reason, because they have quite a bit of angry fans wanting another game that had the mystery of Morrowind.

Yeah, it would not be the first time video game developers have made strange and unusual decisions that make no sense whatsoever.

Take Oblivion and ME3 for example. There are instances in those games when I wondered what the [censored] the developers were thinking when they added (or in some cases excluded) certain things from those titles.

Ugh, being able to have a seat in the Elder Council would've been awesome! Why did they cut it out of Oblivion! :flame:

There should be mod projects focused almost entirely on putting this cut content from Oblivion and Skyrim (not sure if there's sonething like this for Morrowind). :)
